Book Description

October 1994 9 and up
Throughout history, there have always been people who have dared to explore places far from where they lived. Now, in an atlas containing more than 30 full-color and accurate maps, young readers can follow the history of exploration, from Egyptian voyages of 400 B.C. to present-day space and underwater expeditions.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-This British import offers middle graders one more resource on Western explorers. Starkey does include short profiles of non-Westerners such as Ibn Battuta and Cheng Ho and takes a politically correct posture in the introduction: "Today, we still admire the bravery of early explorers, but we also know they often acted cruelly. In their ignorance, they sometimes destroyed the people, cultures, and places they 'discovered'." However, the format of this book remains traditional, with a heavy emphasis on Renaissance world exploration and without clear explanations of colonialism or the profit motive. The book is, overall, visually appealing, especially the maps showing explorers' routes. Some of the inset illustrations, though (both maps and drawings), are too small to be entertaining or informative. This volume is easier to read but contains less information than W.D. Towson's Illustrated Atlas of the World in the Age of Discovery (Warwick, 1981; o.p.) and Keith Lye's Explorers (Silver, 1983; o.p.). Strictly additional.

From Booklist

Gr. 3-5. First published in England, this informative atlas broadly covers the subject of explo-

ration, including such topics as the ancient Greeks; the Vikings; Marco Polo; the European explorers of the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Poles; and the ongoing exploration of the ocean and of space. Though the coverage is necessarily brief, each double-page spread includes a colorful, original map and information about the explorers, the places they found, and the people who lived there. Boxes of text, small photographs of artifacts, reproductions of period paintings and engravings, and drawings of ships, supplies, and people appear around the centrally placed maps, making the pages lively though crowded. Useful supplementary material for classroom units on exploration. Carolyn Phelan

5.0 out of 5 stars Good overview of explorers, many nice details and illustrations, July 29, 2011
This is a nice overview of explorers aimed at upper elementary or middle school students. Each topic is covered with the basic information, along with interesting tidbits and illustrations. For example, Christopher Columbus's pages contain information about the North Atlantic Winds, everyday life aboard ship, and illustrations of the types of supplies taken as well as the items brought back and navigation instruments. There's also a nice cutaway view of the ship. Lots of nice details.

Each topic usually has 2-4 pages devoted to it. The topics covered are as follows:

The Early Explorers (Ancient World, Greeks, Vikings, Middle Ages, Marco Polo)

The First Great Age of Exploration (Europeans in Asian Lands, Vasco de Gama, Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, Hernando Cortes and the Aztecs, Francisco Pizarro and the Incas)

The Second Great Age of Exploration (Explorers of North America, People of North America, Explorers of South America, Exploring South America, Captain Cook, Explorers of Australia, Explorers of Africa, Explorers of the North Pole, Explorers of the South Pole)

The Third Great Age of Exploration (Ocean Exploration, Space Exploration, The Future of Exploration)

Very nice overview of the explorers. I was glad to have it to use to supplement our study of explorers as part of early American history.
