Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6 -The only maps in this "atlas" are a pair of simplified constellation charts in the back matter, but otherwise this tour through the solar system and beyond makes an inviting, functional general overview. Describing the Big Bang theory of the universe, but noting that only "most astronomers" believe it, the book begins at the Beginning, taking a wide-angle view of the stellar life cycle and the current universe as we know it, then zooming in on our solar family with spread-sized introductions to each planet, to major moons, and other smaller objects. It closes with glances at the history of astronomy and space exploration, the aforementioned star charts, and directions for three low-tech science activities. Factual without feeling overstuffed, the text has an easy, informal tone, livened by thought-provoking observations-did you know that Venus's day is longer than its year?-and occasional exclamations. The art, a mix of graphics and photos, usually consists of a large central image into which small pictures, diagrams, captions and side comments are inset; the effect is (pardon) spacious, and adds both content and visual appeal to the discourse. This is a good choice for collections serving less able readers-particularly when supplemented by a good set of maps, such as those in Robin Scagell's Children's Night Sky Atlas (DK, 2004).-John Peters, New York Public Library
