This is a great dictionary for my twin 8yr old daughters. I bought it with the Scholastic Children's Thesaurus, which was not a good thesaurus for anyone.

Great Dictionary, Watch age/grade level when buying,

I bought this dictionary for my daughter last year when she was in first grade. While doing her spelling challenge words we started to run into words that were new for her. Last year the book wasn't used much, however, in second grade this book has proved quite useful for her.
Each week she has to either write out spelling sentences and references this book for about half of the words on her spelling list. She works with a 2nd grade challenge list. So far every word we have needed except for 1 has been in the book. The definitions are short and to the point, some pictures, print is an appropriate size, and the book size isn't overwhelming for her to use. The only reason I give this a 4 star rating is because of Scholastic's 9-12 age range on the book. By the time 5th grade rolls around I can see this book going from a useful to frustrating tool. What were once short and to the point definitions will be watered down, definitions won't be available and so on. I would say this book is more in the young reader to about a 4/5th grade age range.

My 6 year nearly 7 year old second grade daughter needs to now supply the definitions of 20 works weekly. I sat on Amazon and researched for 30 minutes and decided that this would be the best fit at this point for my children. It is a nice hardcover presentation and I feel that it will be used up until my 3 year old enters school. To test the dictionary, I went straight for my daughters' words and happily they were all there with nice short explanations. For some there is even a sentence provided to help children further understand (now to keep my daughter away from copying the sentences LOL).
It is indeed two columns, so the page does not seem as cluttered as say a 4 column dictionary. I do wish that the words were printed in a bold color such as red, but besides that I feel that this is the perfect dictionary for the 2nd to 4th grade set. Highly recommend for 6 to 9 year olds and you should be satisfied as well!

Good Dictionary for K-3,
This review is from: Scholastic Children's Dictionary (Hardcover)
One of my kids favorite dictionaries when they were younger. They liked the phonetic pronunciations that were provided (parachute as pa-ruh-shoot; reservation as rez-ur-vay-shuhn), and the sample sentences which followed most of the definitions. For various spelling programs, the kids had to write sentences using their spelling words, and, while they certainly didn't copy verbatim, the sample sentences definitely aided in comprehension. Now that they are older (5th and 6th), most of the words they look up aren't in this dictionary.

I purchased a number of dictionaries to be used by all the students in a small school. The entries included pronunciation, syllabication, and multiple definitions. They are visually pleasing and thorough enough for third and fourth graders.

This an excellent book for young people. The print is large, bold and the illustration are realistic and colorful. It's a fun book for children to use. The guidelines that are given are most helpful in teaching a young person how to correctly use a dictionary. I especially like the illustrations of the alphabet used in Sign Language. This is a great way for young people to expand their knowledge.

I bought this book along with the children's encyclopedia for my seven year old daughter and a few of the words that we were looking for weren't present in this dictionary.

My six year old daughter's school uses this dictionary as part of the students daily work. We bought one for home and one for the car! We make a car game of looking up the names of objects we see during a drive. This is easy to use and a great learning tool.

Wonderful Resource!,

Wonderful dictionary, well written and illustrated. Clear and concise definitions, yet not insulting to a child's intelligence. DD uses this almost daily for various assignments and it has never let us down. A must have for anyone with children, invaluable to homeschoolers.

I ordered this book as a reference for my daughter when she is completing her second grade writing assignments. The level of this book is advanced so she will grow with it, but not so advanced that she gets frustrated with it. When she is not using it to look up words, she likes to review the pictures and passages of other words as a source of entertainment.
