3.0 out of 5 stars Good but incomplete
While this is a fun book to read through, if you are using it to look up common idioms, this is not the book for you. Many of the common idiomatic expressions we use in our family are simply not in the book at all. This has been a source of frustration as we have tried to look up explanations for the origins of these expressions as well as meanings of common expressions.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!, April 5, 2000

Finally, a book that explains idioms in a way my son can understand-clearly and unambiguously. Because he has an autistic spectrum disorder, he tends to be very literal. He has read this book from cover to cover and is starting to incorporate idioms, usually correctly, into conversation. In addition, the author presents the history (if known) of each idiom, something children(mine) who enjoy factoids love.

This book should be required reading for speech therapists, teachers, the language-delayed, and those learning English as a second language.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to aid kids understand grown-up talk!, January 7, 1997
By A Customer
My husband and I often unconsciously speak in idioms to our kids. Now, when we say things like "don't burn your bridges"; "I'm tickled pink"; or "snug as a bug in a rug", and the kids can find out what we are talking about!

Back in around 97 or 98, I was crazy about these two guys in a movie and started setting up funny situations in a roleplay where one guy would use idioms and the other would take them all literally. I was sooo happy to find this book to use as an idiom reference!!! I tried a couple of other idiom books, but this one is by far the best! ^_^ So warm and friendly, and I luv the cartoon kids who host the thing :) I am totally hooked on this book! ^_^ Buy it, BUY IT!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, January 3, 2007

The book lists many idioms (Alphabeticlally), and provides examples for their use as well as their origin when available. Descriptions are brief and to the point and are accompanied by cute illustrations to break the monotony. I work with children and found that those from grade 2 and on enjoy leafing through the book to find an 'interesting idiom' to quiz their friends about, or to look for a specific idiom's meaning. I utilize it in games and 'trivia' and the children find it delightful. I highy recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crazy and Wild, September 19, 2006
This review is from: Scholastic Dictionary Of Idioms (Paperback)
This book's not your average Joe. It contains so many idioms it will make your head spin. That's a plus and a minus. It doesn't go into a ton of detail. But it fills the bill if you are teaching a class with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for English Language Learners, May 29, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Scholastic Dictionary Of Idioms (Paperback)
I've used Scholastic Dictionary of Idioms for two years. I introduce it as part of bell work activity. It's a time saver so I can occupy learners while I check admit slips and complete attendance. Students copy the sample sentence. If the sentence doesn't give a clear meaning-usage, I modify it, but the text still remains enormously useful because I give the students the meaning(s)and origin(s) Terban's research provides. I work with English Language Learners. Ironically students sometimes remember the meaning(s) and origins better than the content of the rest of the period when I quiz them. At least that's what my research reveals. I highly recommend this text for any teachers who work with elementary, middle school, and high school. In fact, I use this text for 11th and 12th graders.

This is a well laid out book for people trying to grasp all the odd sayings we have in English. It has an index in the back that lists the sayings alphabetically so the reader can easily find out what "blowing your stack" means. The definitions are simple and very accurate. The additional history behind the sayings is not necessary but an interesting sidebar. I use it for ESL students and have given it as a very well received gift.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, April 24, 2007
This review is from: Scholastic Dictionary Of Idioms (Paperback)
Fairly good source for origins of idioms. Not all are here, but many. Some "conjecture" as to origin on many, but they do seem logical. A good over-all (particularly sufficient for elementary level) resource & nice leisure reading.

The book is great. Seller was quick! The only way it could be better would be if there were even MORE expressions and their origins. This was a gift and the recipient loved it!
