Lesson learnt in a nice way,

I like this story for many reasons, including the rhyming sentences, the straightforward illustrations, the simple and gentle reminders from the teacher and the happy ending. I think my son likes it because zoo is one of his favourite place.

The First Grade Friends series are great books for beginning readers!! My daughter enjoyed reading these books. They are "AR" books.

We are a homeschool family and needed more books to practice reading besides those with our reading program. My son is at a beginning first-grade reading level, and this was challenging enough without being overwhelming. It says it's for pre-k through grade 1, so that's about right. I don't think he could have read this alone as a kindergartener.

I'm not happy with this book. I don't see what a kid learns and walks away with -- it's just practicing reading. There's a difference between practicing reading and learning reading/reading to learn to read.
I bought a bunch of these Scholastic books from Amazon and I've given them away. I guess I've been spoilt by having access to books from England - they are dense with hidden pedagogy- and seem new every time a kid opens them. I have post grad English teaching credentials and have worked with adults learning English as another language and teaching them and slow native English adult readers to read and I know how different children are. |
