Format: Paperback
Many "easy readers" are much too difficult for struggling readers in first or second grade. Leveled trade books that these children are given to read are often perceived as "baby books." Hippo and Rabbit are great for several reasons:

- they are enjoyable and funny from a kid's point of view
- they have a graphic novel format (many graphic novels are written at a 4th grade level or higher)
- they are simple in terms of the decoding demands on the child, but at the same time set the expectation for inferential thinking

I'm always on the hunt for books that my reluctant readers in the classroom will gravitate to on their own and this series is a hit!

I really enjoyed Hippo and Rabbit. They are quite the odd couple. The author kept me giggling throughout the book. The stories are written in comic book format and introduce children to conversational writing. The words were age appropriate with a few challenge words such as lettuce, but the pictures give word clues that make it easy to figure out. I have no complaints at all with this book! My favorite story is Swing. If you want to know why, you have to read the book yourself.
