The best there is,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Type To Learn 3 (CD-ROM)
In school we were learning how to type, and used type to learn 3. This product is brilliant. It teaches you how to type, let's you get used to new keys, and challenges you the better at typing you get. I'm now one of the best typers in my school! This is a MUST buy!!!

This product is better than average in providing a developmentally sound sequence. Like the others it doesn't allow a choice to go back and practice a letter sequence over and over to mastery, the sequences are generally too short for development of good motor habits, and the rhythm is frequently interrupted by game-like sound and graphics. Less than half the time spent using the program is actual keyboarding practice. May be better than nothing, depending on the individual user's ability to bridge the interruptions and spend enough meaningful time practicing. Kids definitely need continual adult supervision to maintain correct posture and fingering.

I will return the copy that I bought used to the vendor. After installation, it had the error message "Fatal Error : Failed to open DAT file "Splash." When I contacted Tech Support, they said that I must have an older version, not compatible with Microsoft Vista. The label says, v1.0h. Copyright 2002. System requirements on Amazon specified Windows 95 and higher. Type to Learn 3 Single Edit

I bought this thinking it will work on Windows Vista and/or Windows 7, no luck. Good thing the seller agreed the return and gave me a link to a Vista compatible product.
Bought this one instead: Type To Learn 3 V1.2s- VISTA & MAC OSX/INTEL COMPATIBLE

My kids use this product to learn to type at school, but they only do it once per week for a 1/2 hour, not consistent enough to really learn to type fluently. I bought this home version and it does seemingly everything the school version does. Both kids spend about 10 minutes a day on it, its fun and its teaching them fluency in typing.

Not for lower-level students,

This review is from: Type To Learn 3 (CD-ROM)
I recently had Type to Learn4 installed in my classroom. It is ok for the motivated students, but impossible for the lower level students. Even though you can reset the goals, the lessons can't be passed by many of the students. If you pass the assessment at 15 wpm and 85% accuracy, it makes you 17 wpm and 87% accuracy before you can move on for the next lessson. The lessons are long and this is frustrating for the students. How can you be expected to do new material faster than the review material? (especially the first time with the shift keys) The program keeps crashing. Yes, the reports look nice if you have only one student to review, but it is very awkward to go into 10 classes (250) students and find the class and then the student to adjust scores each time. It sounds like it differentiates and modifies, but I hate it!!!!

My 8 year old son loves this game and he is already improving on his keyboarding skills. He had been playing it at Occupational Therapy and liked it so much that he could hardly wait to play it at home.

FIX for Windows 7 & Vista,
By
This review is from: Type To Learn 3 (CD-ROM)
Product is great and CAN be made to work with Windows 7 & Vista with only 1 extra step! This also works for Windows 7 Pro 64-bit! All I did was install normally and then copy the "Res" directory and its contents from the install disk into the "C:\TTL3Home" directory on my hard-disk. Do NOT change the program location or the "Sunburst" name/folder during install to anywhere or anything else. Then program works properly. I do get some jitter in the sound and it occassionally freezes (just push something and it unfreezes)- that's the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 (but this program is over 5 years old and still worthwhile). Anyway, the kids don't care - it works and is a fun program they enjoy using and hardly notice they are learning. I found this fix on the Sunburst Tech support link ([...]) and also when I Googled the "Type to Learn 3" "Splash". HUGE thanks to Mike DeRouse ([...])for his determination and discovering this fix! Also, there are 2 newer versions as well, the Learn to Type 3 V1.2s (supposedly fixes the Vista/Windows 7 install glitches) and Learn to Type 4 (whole new game/tutorial theme. Both are supposed to work without the extra install step. Finally, there is an online only version 4.

I hate Type to Iearn 3/immense mistake,
This review is from: Type To Learn 3 (CD-ROM)
Worst game ever. It doesn't help you learn to type. It mostly just Irks children. If this rateing chart would let me go to 0 I would. I recommend not to buy it. If you do it's a immense mistake. It uses horrible typing methods. This review took me 15 min. to type all because of type to learn. Don't make the same mistake I did.
sincerely, Michael |
