W.K. Blais adroitly knits together unexpected forces in School of the Assassins. By melding the very real invasion of Mexican drug cartels into US drug culture, disaffected and adrift veterans, American foreign policy via the training of Latin American guerrillas at the School of the Americas, and the disturbing politics of South Africa, Blais has given us a gripping tale with believable, consistent characters and strong plot lines.
I give the book four stars instead of 5 only because the ending, as other reviewers have noted, receives short shrift and should instead be a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Invisible War May 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This fast-paced, well-written thriller combines little known contemporary history of the ongoing war in South Africa with today's drug scene in the Los Angeles area. The author uses a powerful descriptive narrative and a keen understanding of people caught up in extreme circumstances to move the reader at a fast clip through this entertaining tale of suffering and redemption.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down June 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I started this book at 11pm and finished it in one sitting. This well-written thriller has interesting, sympathetic characters and compelling multiple plot lines. The author offers a preview of what may be in our near future--Mexican drug cartels morphing into American criminal syndicates. The action ranges from South Africa to the San Fernando Valley, and Blais's vivid writing brings all these settings into vibrant life. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Read June 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The genocide in South Africa surprised me. The Mexican drug cartels moving into Los Angeles was a nice touch. And the US training elite Hispanics right here in the US is glorious paranoia. An unconventional mix of characters and problems raises this thriller above most despite the cardboard villains (with one intriguing exception). Bravo for the unique "love" affair, the activist grandma, the envious cousin. My only complaint--not enough to take away stars--is the too speedy ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Edge of your seat page turner October 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a well-crafted thriller centered around compelling characters. The detailed descriptions of action-packed encounters reveal the author's obvious military background, experience, and research. I think this book would make a terrific film that would also bring the South African farm owners' atrocities to light for a broad audience.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent thriller! August 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Straight through from first page to last, School of the Assassins had me in its grip with an original story, convincing characters and non-stop action so that I could not put it down. This book is well-written, virtually free of any typos or editing issues, and it certainly stands up to anything written by the big-name mystery and thriller writers. Very good, and I will be looking for more books by this author.
