School-Savvy is not just for August and September,
By A Customer
This review is from: The School-Savvy Parent: 365 Insider Tips to Help You Help Your Child (Paperback)
What a wonderful treasure I uncovered when I read The School-Savvy Parent! This is not a book to be used just in August and September. You'll use this book all year. There are tips that have helped me make mornings less stressful, ease the homework anxiety, and for holiday savvy parenting. There are even examples of conversation starters that actually get my child talking about school. The School-Savvy Parent is indexed and so it's easy to use when I want to look up something specific. I take it with me while I'm waiting for soccer practice to end and enjoy snappy, humorous tips that help me help my child. No parent bashing here.

Being a new teacher is overwhelming for me. The School-Savvy Parent, 365 Insider Tips to Help You Help Your Child has helped me in communicating with the parents of my students. The book identifies the types of problems I'm already seeing in my classroom and offers tips that I can pass along to parents. I appreciate the experience of the three veteran teacher authors. It's like having a mentor around to help guide me. The book is free of educational jargon and has a very positive tone towards parents. It communicates the idea of the parent/teacher partnership in education which is the atmosphere I want to create in my classroom. I recommend it to any educator from the experienced to the novice. With our busy jobs we can use the index of this handy book to find helpful suggestions for the common problems faced by our students and their parents.

I heard about this book from a friend and bought it the first chance I had. School-Saavy has changed the way I raise my children. I no longer worry about being "left out" of my children's school life. This book taught me to catch my children's school problems before they start. Since I read School-Saavy my kids are getting spectacular grades because I know how to help them. Thanks Saavy authors!

I picked this book up at the bookstore after reading about it in the Courier Journal Newspaper. It is just what I needed. I have been trying to do just one tip a day from the book and it seems to be helping me help my children be more successful. I feel like I am more "in the know" about school. I would highly recommend this book to parents.

Waste of time and money,
This review is from: The School-Savvy Parent: 365 Insider Tips to Help You Help Your Child (Paperback)
This book is a glorified version of everyday common sense. It is full of "insightful" tips like 'Check your child's backpack and schoolwork each night' and 'A child who has a fever, upset stomach, flu or severe cold or cough should be kept home from school.' Gee, why didn't I think of that! If you need a book to tell you these and other "insider" tips then you need more help than this book could possibly give you! I bought this book because I was looking for homework and test taking tips for my second grader. I was very disappointed.

A handy, quick reference guide, but parents must go for more serious books!,

As a compact, handy, quick reference guide, this book certainly meets the intents & purposes of the authors, who are teachers, but who also happen to be parents themselves.
The coverage is pretty broad-based, as readers can see from the chapter layout, as follows: - Back to School Tips; - Home-School Communication; - Routines to live by; - Health & Safety; - Homework & Tests; - Talents & Learning Styles; - Setting Goals; - Enrichment; - Personal Responsibility; - Getting along with Others; - Volunteering; - Holidays & Breaks; The practical insider tips are written in short bursts to the many questions parents would often want to ask about their children's school experiences. In this respect, the authors have done quite a good job. However, parenting is a very serious affair. It is an accepted fact that parents are their children's first teachers & their homes are their children's first classrooms. The insider tips from this book alone cannot solve your parenting problems or issues. You have to read more seriously written books. Some of the books listed as further reading resources under FYI in this particular book are worth exploring. As a matter of fact, the publisher of this particular book, Free Spirit Publishing (website: www.freespirit.com), happens to have excellent books for the serious parent/reader. I would recommend a few: - What Young Children Need to Succeed, by Jolene Roehkepartain; - Playing Smart, by Susan Perry; - How to Help Your Child with Homework, by Jeanne Shay Schumm; Once you have peruse these serious books, then the insider tips from this particular book will become more useful & meaningful. For the purpose of scoring, I would rate this book a 4.
