4.0 out of 5 stars I love this book, but my 9 year old isn't excited about it, August 11, 2009

This review is from: School Smarts Homework Survival Guide: The Skills and Stuff You Need to Succeed [With Stickers and Stencils] (American Girl) (Spiral-bound)
This book is full of exactly what I want my daughter to know about homework and how to stay responsible at school. It's all the things that parents and teachers think kids should be doing but just assume they should know. Also, kids often don't want to hear it from parents. It talks about making a cozy quiet study space, staying organized at your desk and at school, writing down assignments as the teacher gives them, pacing yourself for long-term assignments, etc.

Here's the downside. My 9 year old daughter likes Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and she's not excited about this book. I was excited to give it to her and she wouldn't read it, then when she started, she said that she just didn't like it. Now that we are reading it together (some Mom and Daughter time) she is tolerating it. She is going into 4th grade.

It has great information, but I'm not sure if they've really figured out how to get through to the kids who need this! (I'm sure a homework-buff would love it but would think it too simple.)

This inviting, colorful and easy to understand guide was a great hit with my 11 year old daughter that was reluctant to organize her homework. Loads of tear-out sections including flash cards, bookmarks and inspiring posters make it child and parent friendly. We now look forward to homework with many years ahead of us.
