I will share Gizmodo's sentiment about this product 100%. This booooombox doesn't have to sound like a Harmon Kardon system. All it has to do is look good next to cardboard and play N.W.A., Nolan Thomas, Warren G and Kenny Loggins the way they were meant to be heard. That, it does.

It does take 10 "D" cell batteries, and I found that you can find a pack of 10 at Target for about $9 if you hunt around, AND you can prolong the life of the batteries if you make sure to switch the AC/DC switch on the back to AC when you are not using it. Otherwise the clock (any "sleep mode" functions) will suck the battery life down. That or it all transferred to the iPod. I'm not sure - just make sure to flip that switch.

It even comes in a huge box you could cut up and breakdance on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old School Style + New School Tech = AWESOME!, July 17, 2008
This review is from: Old School Style High Performance Portable Music System with Ipod Slot (Electronics)
I just received my Lasonic i931 and I'm in love. The lows sound great, as do the mids and highs. It looks amazing and the remote is awesome. I was blasting my Tribe Called Quest and couldn't be happier.

PROS - I mean look at it, it's awesome. And it sounds great too!

CONS - 10 D batteries? Are you kidding me? Good thing there's a plug. Also, I'm not convinced that this actually recharges your ipod as you listen to it. The ipod says it's recharging...but I'm not 100% sure...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mesiah of Boombox systems, February 4, 2009
This review is from: Old School Style High Performance Portable Music System with Ipod Slot (Electronics)
Ever since I was little I always wanted a boombox like my man radio raheim. I had been looking for them for a total of three years now that I can afford one. My only setback was the fact that I wanted a new one, with the bboy look to it. I couldn't find one new. So I decided just to wait. One day I stumbled across this boombox at urban outfitters. I was sold from the moment I laid eyes on it. I couldn't take my eyes off of this beauty for 10 mins. The sound is great, and to top it all off it plays an Ipod. What more could you want. I find no cons to this device. Some people say that the fact you have to buy 10 D batteries a con, but I beg to differ. I spent 70$ on ten rechargeable batteries and a recharger so I'm straight. Can't wait to bring this to South Beach and The Puerto Rican Day Parade!!!!!!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars good for low expectations, June 14, 2010

Bought this for the retro looks and for use in a garage. I wouldn't recommend buying for it's sound quality (there are much better sounding and smaller ipod docks out there). It does feel and look pretty "cheap" but so did almost every real boombox back in the era of boomboxes. I give it a 4 probably because my expectations were appropriately low. It gives the vintage boombox look and will definitely start conversations, but don't expect great sound and don't rely on it as a primary stereo system.

5.0 out of 5 stars This boom box is rad!, February 22, 2010

This boom box is exactly what it should be. Straight forward, loud, and with a presence that really gets noticed.

It doesn't fit an iphone though, only every other model ipod. The usb slot is very useful, but having the usb stick out can get bumped pretty easy. The SD card is the best option for me.

I am glad i went for the more expensive box. The sound quality and loudness is awsome. Not to mention it looks cool when you walk into a room with it on your shoulder and everyone looks. I also enjoy that it runs on AC or DC.

Lets put it bluntly. If you want sound quality to be your top priority, you can do much better than this boombox for the price. But if you've seen the pictures of it, and think it looks awesome, then its probably worth picking up.

Lets be honest, a system with 4 inch woofers and 1 inch tweeters, that sounds this 'poor' (relatively speaking) is kinda disgraceful. Its not bad by any means, but you'd think such a huge system (and it is surprisingly big) would be able to fit the technology in there to make it sound better. I have speakers smaller than this unit that sound much better. To be kind to lasonic though, my guess on why the speakers are this week is that the entire system was designed to work on battery power alone. But this baby uses an ungodly amount of battery's, leaving only the dedicated to actually go out and go 'portable' with this unit. So the vast majority of users will probably just use this as a really cool looking shelf unit. To them, they might find the sound some what lacking.

That being said, this box is surprisingly useful. It has an aux in jack for a microphone (with built in echo effects for massive awesome), so you can use this to rap over beats, easy karaoke, or even a make shift PA system if your so inclined. It also has a plethora of inputs on it. From the useful (regular aux in for mp3 players, USB port) to the kinda weird (SD card slot?). But they do get points for that. Its even a functional alarm clock as well, and its pretty easy to set to boot. Its got pretty good radio reception as well, though I never played much with this, as I never listen to the radio.

As far as ipod integration goes... well they get points for trying. It plays the ipod just fine, secures it well, and the ipod even looks cool in there. But dont expect to use any of the promised menu functions, like changing playlists or albums. It can be done, but the display on this is too small to read from a great distance, leaving you do actually be close to the unit to see what your doing, and at that distance, its almost faster to get the ipod out and manually change the music yourself. (BE WARNED: itouches and iphones will not fit in this unit. If you keep the ipod door open, it will actually play songs off the units, but it'll look awful. I have seen a gold version of this boombox that does reportedly play itouch devices, but dont spend the 300 it retails for, its not worth that much)

As far as complaints go, there aren't much for me. The decals for the radio settings are kinda dumb looking. The old boombox actually visually showed what radio channel it was set too at the top. This has instead been replaced with a sticker mimicking the old boombox. It woulda been nice if they spent the extra 10 bucks and put in the real functional radio indicator up there. The whole unit is somewhat 'plastic-y' as well in some places, namely the knobs and buttons. But the unit is pretty hefty, and has a solid feel to it overall.

But all in all, this is a solid boombox. It sounds good for the price point (though to pay what this unit used to be retailed for, it would be a rip off). If you get this to ride the nostalgia train, or to have a good looking decoration (its probably the coolest looking ipod soundsystem out there), then you really cant go wrong. But if your expecting audiophile quality (or to play this super loud with no distortion) then there are better options out there for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars i931 Ghetto Blaster, June 20, 2010
This review is from: Old School Style High Performance Portable Music System with Ipod Slot (Electronics)
Hi got the Lansonic i931 Ghetto Blaster, Got from else where but am leaving a review here:

On received it opened up the box, and damn this radio is very big better than I thought it would be looks really nice.

Next to test it and put some music onto a 4gb sd card which worked fine. Sounded loud and good until I noticed I only had sound from 1 speaker, I thought this was strange and after checking everything in the manual to find it has to be a fault and as i know a bit about electronics I decided to open it up to see whats wrong. On opening it up I discovered the wires for the right side speakers (Treble and Bass) were not even soldered just hanging in there and making no connection at all anyway I get my soldering iron out and solder the wires in how they should have been and then re tested it and all worked fine after that. Seems they have idoits making these and the solder work inside is of best quality but can be fixed if they havent done it correctly.

Ok after getting it all working correctly sound quality trebles are very good, midrange is good and bass is good for a portable radio best i hav seen so far without subwoofers.

features: SD / FM / AM / IPOD Dock /USB / AUX I hav only tested the SD card slot and the AUX which both work good. Ipod dock seems like u can only use some older ipods as newer ones wont fit i.e. u cant use ipod touch or iphone or even ipod classic as it comes with ipod dock cartridge holders and u can only use 4 types of ipod but u could coonect a newer one with the AUX , I think the SD card Slot is best as doesnt eat as much power and doesnt stick out like a usb stick does.

FM Radio I have tested and works well, the aerial be care with that it is fragile and i bent it but sorted it out, it isnt as strong as most aerials are.

10 D Batteries to Power this thing! 15 volts in total so makes it even loud when running off batteries i see a lot of people see 10 batteries as a downside but it isnt if u look at it the more batteries it takes the louder it would be. They shoud make one that takes even 12 or 14 batteries on a newer model with bigger amp in it.

remote control works nicely and so do all buttons on the radio itself. Overall i give the product 4 out of 5 but the workmen who done the solder i give them 2 out 10 very poor job if someone with no skills to fix this then it would be useless and cost money to return it, lansonic get your act together and do proper checking before sending out to customers.

If you want a like radio i would recommend it, just be prepaired for poor worksman ship inside the radio and u may hav to fix solder joints inside unless lasonic improve on the quality of their worksman ship.

1.0 out of 5 stars I would not recommend the old school style portable music system, February 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Old School Style High Performance Portable Music System with Ipod Slot (Electronics)
Unfortunately, the unit was broken when we gave it to our son for Christmas. The buttons were nonresponsive; nor did his iPod Touch fit in the unit. We never did get it to work from the manual controls; when we did get it to work with the remote it sounded tinny.

The front of the unit, rather than having actual controls, was covered with a plastic decal. It looked like something you would find at a flea market for about $25. Seriously.

On the upside, the store that I bought the unit from was extremely congenial and responsive, and refunded my money quickly. They were absolutely fantastic - Apex Suppliers. They answered emails very promptly and made sure that I was completely satisfied.

It was so disappointing to give my son a gift of such poor quality for Christmas. I just don't think others out there should make the same mistake.
