A Sourcebook not to be missed,
By sandra rolef "Director of Educationl Support ... (Rockville, Maryland) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: School Success for Kids With Asperger's Syndrome: A Practical Guide for Parents and Teachers (Paperback)
Stephen Silverman and Rich Weinfeld combine their expertise in the fields of psychology and special education to create a valuable resource for parents, teachers, and clinicians who service kids with Asperger's Syndrome. Their book presents complex information in a straightforward, reader friendly manner that highlights every aspect of AS. Beginning with an interesting historical overview of the syndrome, the authors go on to describe diagnostic characteristics as well as outline in detail specific strategies that have proven to be successful in dealing with AS kids in the classroom. As a teacher and administrator in the field of special education for over thirty years, I found these suggestions to be extremely practical tools that make sense and would be a tremendous support to a teacher working with kids who have Asperger's Syndrome. The authors meticulously define state of the art best practices for teachers and parents and particulary highlight a strengths based approach. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has the pleasure of working with children who have AS.

Practical and easy to read,
This review is from: School Success for Kids With Asperger's Syndrome: A Practical Guide for Parents and Teachers (Paperback)
As a clinician with patients who have children diagnosed with Asperger's, I found this book a wealth of information in both diagnosis and treatment. The book emphasizes a strength based approach, with accomodations made to allow these kids to add their special talents to the learning environment of their "normal" peers. I highly recommend it to other clinicians, teachers, parents and friends of these special kids.Katie Ivey, L.C.S.W.

A reader-friendly, tell-it-like-it-is guide,

This review is from: School Success for Kids With Asperger's Syndrome: A Practical Guide for Parents and Teachers (Paperback)
Child/adolescent psychologist Stephan M. Silverman, Ph.D. and educational advocate for gifted children with learning difficulties Rich Weinfeld pool their talents in School Success for Kids with Asperger's Syndrome, a no-nonsense guide for parents and teachers to helping children with Asperger's Syndrome, or AS (a mild form of autism spectrum disorder that affects language and social skills) rise to their full potential. Chapters discuss how to recognize and diagnose AS, effective classroom strategies, ideal practices for parenting with AS, preparing young people with AS for college, work, and independent living, and much more. "Children with AS frequently feel affection but do not know how to appropriately express those feelings. They need to have guidelines as to who is an appropriate recipient of affection and under which conditions. They need to know when someone is a friend or an acquaintance and when intimacy is appropriate." A reader-friendly, tell-it-like-it-is guide enthusiastically recommended for parents, caretakers and educators responsible for young people with AS.

I've had this book for 3 years. I have marked it up and written in it and have loaned it to many and suggested it several times. I have found it a most helpful tool to get great ideas for IEP's and helpful suggestions for home and teachers.

This book was geared more toward a child. But good reading none the less. If you have an Asperger child, I would recommend it.

A good overview with practical, helpful advice for teachers,

I have been a teacher for 15 years and have taught several students who have been diagnosed with Asperger's (and several more who have Asperger's but have not yet been diagnosed). I bought this book when I found out I was going to have a student in my middle school class that was severe on the Asperger's scale. This book provided an excellent description of typical (and non-typical) Asperger's characteristics and presented a variety of ideas, tips, suggestions for me to use with all of my students (both those with Asperger's and their "neuro-typical" peers). If you have a good deal of background knowledge and prior experience with this topic, this book may not be the most helpful, but for me it was a good overview and introduction to teaching students with Asperger's Syndrome.

If you have a child with Aspergers,or any related learning difficulties, or you are a teacher, or work with kids, definitely read this book. It gives huge insights into how to understand and help kids with these troubles... and sometimes the things that are most helpful are NOT what I would have expected!

As a parent of a child with special education needs, I found this book to be highly informative and well written. The authors' description of behaviors and the specific nuances of children with Aspergers were so accurate they seemed custom written for my son. They defined and described this disorder in terms that I intuitively knew but could not clearly express. I brought the book to a recent IEP meeting and read passages that immediately connected with his teacher and special education support staff. In fact, I enjoyed this book so much that I purchased another copy and provided it to our school's special education team. Thank you so much for writing this book!
