4.0 out of 5 stars A great box set albeit a bit pricey, September 26, 2000

If you grew up in the 70s you remember Schoolhouse Rock. Those little three minute cartoons really grew on you. My daughter is 9 and she loves this set... we listen to it in the car all the time. I have two small gripes, though: as other reviewers have noted this is not the entire collection. There are four Money Rock songs that are only available on the Best Of Schoolhouse Rock disc. Also, this four disc set would fit on two discs with room to spare (even with the additional four Money Rock songs). Spreading it over four compact discs smacks of gouging and that kept me from giving it five stars. But it is a great set and there's nothing quite like it. Recommended if you have kids (they'll dig it) or were a child of the 70s.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'll unpack an adjective...Wonderful, February 12, 2000
This review is from: Schoolhouse Rock! (1973 TV Series) (Audio CD)
Though SHR was before my time, I still heard the songs when we watched an America Rock tape in my eigth grade history class. I absolutly loved them. When I saw that there was a complete box set, i asked for it for x-mas. I now own it and love it. The songs are great. While America Rock is, in my opinion, the best overall, science rack has the best music and Grammer rock is the most helpful in terms of actually teaching something. Though this set isn't cheap, it is well worth it considering you get four classic CDs, and intersting liner notes that tell the story of SHR. This is a must have collection for anyone who remebers SHR, or wants their children to remember it.

4.0 out of 5 stars So close to five stars..., April 14, 2000

I love school house rock. All of the songs are great, even the songs I didn't think were all that wonderful when I first got the CDs. But one flaw remains. This is NOT the complete school house rock songs. If you want the other half of money rock, you'll have to dish out another 12$. I just went to the library and checked out the Best of School House Rock and just kept on renewing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless, September 8, 2003

Anyone born before 1980 remembers the time when cartoons were only played during the day on Saturday mornings (before Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Toon Disney came along). Your Mom couldn't blast you out of bed before 7 a.m. on a weekday, but your internal 'toon clock got you up at 6:30 a.m. to watch Saturday morning cartoons. And inbetween shows, there was a brilliant little series of short musical toons called "Schoolhouse Rocks". Back in the days before Hooked On Phonics or Baby Einstein, these shorts taught multiplying, english grammar, history, and science, all set to fun music and cool blues tunes. In this clever boxed set, you get all four series on CD, averaging about 12 to 14 songs per CD. It's a reasonable price for a boxed set (around 45-50 bucks)and totally worth it! Even kids today know "Conjunction Junction" and "I'm Just a Bill", but haven't heard "Naughty Number Nine", "No More Kings", "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly Get You Adverbs", or "Tax Man Max". It's fun to listen to these songs and remember the words. I bought these for my kids to listen to in the car, and now a new generation is adopting them as their own. We love them, and so will you.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Made a Mistake!!, June 12, 2001

I bought the first 3 audio CD's individually and I absolutly LOVE THEM!! I wish this four disc set were available when I made my purchases. Not only do they bring back great memories of those Saturday mornings in my childhood, but perhaps it was ABC's free version of today's "Hooked on Phonics" and even today is a great teaching tool. This set even has extra songs that my individual CD's do not, I'll not buy this set now, but you can bet if something should happen to my 3 discs (heaven forbid) it'll be at the top of my shopping list!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully fun and amusing!, November 4, 1999

How excited am I that other adults listen to schoolhouse rock! I have "schoolhouse rock rocks" and a friend lent me the box set - How cool is that? I loved to hear all the songs that weren't on my "rock" disc! I would much rather listen to these songs from my childhood than music from the 80's!

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST for any scool teacher (or child of the 70's, like me), March 24, 2000
This review is from: Schoolhouse Rock! (1973 TV Series) (Audio CD)
I can remember seeing ALL of these cartoon shorts while watching Saturday morning TV. It was fun, and an unobtrusive way to learn at the same time! Each song, whether from Grammar, Science, America, or Mathmatics Rock broke the learning process down into fundamental, easy to learn and understandable concepts. This is how I learned the Preamble to the Constitution! Not only are the songs fun and catchy, they are unassumingly educational. I feel that each of these CD's needs to be brought into the elementary schools of America to give a good foundation to the children of today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hurray for Schoolhouse Rock!, July 30, 1999

I was thrilled when I came upon this collection. By just listening to a few of the audio samples, my entire childhood came back. It was amazing to me that after so many years, I remembered all of the words. I remember sitting in school taking tests singing the songs to myself to help me.I don't think there are too many people who can recite the Preamble to the Constitution. I can't, but I can sing it! I'm glad these songs are back to help my children in the same way. Bravo!

...just wanted to comment on what Peter from Georgia said about all these songs fitting on two CDs rather than four -- this is true! but the reason for the four disks is that they seperate four different Schoolhouse Rock! segments -- Grammer, Science, Math, and Government. Kind of. Like, why is *electricity, electricity* on the same disk with the Grammer stuff and not the Science? I completely understand your point, just thought i'd clarify...

I grew up on these songs, and yes, this is where i learned the parts of speech, the concept of Infinity, and the Preamble to the Constitution, not only the words, but the meaning behind it!!

I still have a tape that i made in the late 80's of a few of the SHR! songs by recording them OFF OF THE TELEVISION and then making copies for friends who shared my enthusiasm.

I've hummed, sung, shared, and connected over these songs for 25 years (YEESH!!!) and i'm REALLY glad that it's still around.

If you just can't get enough of SHR!, you might want to check out the original-resurgence cover album by AltRockers Moby, Ween, Blind Melon, and The Lemonheads, among others, called Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks...

And we can't forget that there wouldn't BE a Schoolhouse Rock! if there weren't a Saturday Morning -- if yer into GenXSlackerRock, check out Saturday Morning Cartoons' Greatest Hits, which came out just previous to the SHR!R release, and spurred the mid-90s revival of all things Saturday Morning.

4.0 out of 5 stars What's your function?, November 8, 2005
By
This review is from: Schoolhouse Rock! (1973 TV Series) (Audio CD)
This collection includes all the songs that were written for Schoolhouse Rock. There is a lot of nostalgia here for those of us who grew up in the '70s. I enjoy almost all of the songs, but the ones that were added after i grew up have less appeal to me. The Multiplication Rock songs sound the best, since they were taken from the master tapes. Most of the other songs were recorded directly from the cartoons, so they aren't in stereo and they include the sound effects from the cartoons. This generally isn't too bad, but I find the abundance of sound effects on "No More Kings" to be somewhat annoying. One other minor complaint: the "Scooter Computer and Mr. Chips" songs are too dated. Computer technology advanced so fast that they were almost immediately obsolete. But fans of Schoolhouse Rock should still get this collection. To quote Lisa Simpson, "this is one of those campy '70s throwbacks that appeals to Generation Xers."
