Book Description

0803992769 978-0803992764 August 5, 1996
Challenging the prevalent orthodox in policy circles in South Asia, Girls Schooling, Women's Autonomy, and Fertility Change in South Asia argues that sending girls to school is not the equivalent of birth control. This collection of both theoretical and empirical papers by some of the leading South Asian experts in demography and education provides valuable material. It demonstrates that simply educating girls is not sufficient to reduce birth rates, although that belief is still widely held. This volume maintains that an education is indeed valuable and essential for girls and that it should be justified and supported as such, but not because of some presumed impact on fertility decline, and that the focus on girls' schooling should not detract from the need to provide contraceptive, maternal, and child health services aimed at enabling couples to successfully plan the family sizes they want. Areas of interest for this engaging book include, demography and population studies, womens' studies, education, development studies, sociology and social anthropology.
