Fans of "Schott's Original Miscellany" may think of this as a potential gift for the sportsfan in their life, but it does not carry enough detail for the typical sportsfan, in part because in its strenuous effort to be both broad and flippant it extends its scope to crossword puzzles, quizzes, and the like...so it's great on the miscellany dimensions and scant on the sports. But if you are satisfied to know a single set of trivial details about cricket and one about polo and one about [whatever], this might be ok for you.

If on the other hand, you're not a sportsfan but are merely looking for more Schott's like reading material, I recommend instead the "Companion" series, which show every sign of being issued by the same publisher (same size format, typeface, etc.) althoug they are from Robson books rather than Bloomsbury. Examples includes "The London Companion," "The Literary Companion," "The Gardener's Companion," etc.

I bought this book as a gift for my husband, a true sports addict and a true student of all that he watches. Ever since he received it, I've caught him many times, poring over the pages, learning even more trivia with which to bedevil me and his friends.

Part of the decision was based on my previous experience with the Schott guides, which we've enjoyed thoroughly.

Quotes, stats, weird facts, minutia--it's all here in _Schott's Sporting, Gaming, and Idling Miscellany_. A further continuation of the Schott's Miscellany books, this one retains the same old-fashioned feeling of its predecessors. Reading like a handbook of arcane knowledge kept by a Renaissance Man, it's a throwback source, rambling through everything from horse racing oddities to the layout of the streets for the Pamplona bull run to recipes for cocktails to people who died laughing and to deprecated Olympic sports. It even has a bookmark ribbon. If you like strange facts, this is a great source for oddities to drop into conversations.

If the book suffers in any way, it's its age. As of this review, eight years have passed since it was first published, and the book's most recent sports stats are from 2004. While some of the other books in the series don't rely as heavily on dated info, this one is hurt a bit by it, which seem unavoidable given the subject matter.

Great book, but it needs a second edition.

Just as in his previous efforts, Mr. Schott assembles an amusing collection of trivia. Well worth the effort whenever one wants to waste some time. Thoroughly enjoyable, and you learn something as well!

This book is exactly what it claims to be, the only thing that might deter US buyers, are that is has the metric system (oh no!) & has a definite English (like England) take on things.
I definitely like it better than the annuals, but nothing beats the original general Schott's.
But any mind that makes mine valid, is an A+ in my world.
