Quality decline?,

This review is from: Schrade 160OT Mountain Lion with Leather Sheath (Sports)
Having a variety of Schrade knives purchased over the past 20 years, it appears (on two recently purchased knives) that quality in workmanship and materials has declined. On this model, blade is crooked beyond reasonable tolerances.
Sheath is also of much poorer quality than Schrade used to produce. Given relatively low price, OK as long as you don't expect the quality to be as good as traditional Schrade products. Quality of Schrade Sharpfinger just purchased was somewhat better, but still was disappointing.

I gave this knife five stars because it is a great knife for the price. I'll know more after a couple of years use.
I am impressed with the sheath, also. Nice thick leather. I would buy this again.

As collectors and users of knives, my husband and I love this knife. We carry different knives on different days, as it is a novelty to vary on which size/style to carry each day! great knife!!!!

Schrade Woodsman
Positives: Nice Looking Knife, good weight and balance, Can't beat the price Paid $21 with shipping, Negatives: Blade Came in dull compared to a new Buck or Case XX, I immediately had to put an edge on the blade, Sheath SO SO Hopes: Hope it retains an edge, will find out with use, I plan on beating on this unit in my garden Opinion Good knife for the money Good User, Concerns: Lets see if the blade rusts or stains or holds edge over the next year, More expensive, but Comp USA made Buck and case knives appear to have higher quality blades

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this knife. I got the knife in the mail and then literally two hours later I accidentally dropped it onto the concrete pavement. I saw it hit the ground on its side, cross-guard first, slamming the tip of the blade into the cement. It held its point and there was only a slight scuff on the cross-guard. It seems to have been intended as a skinning knife and so the blade does curve back pretty far as most skinners do. Still makes a great utility knife. The handle is made of a type of polymer branded "Delrin"(acetal) and it's a very, very tough and rigid polymer intended for industrial use. I'm confident that the knife handle will outlast most wooden-handled knives, and possibly even stag scale knives. When I was told that these Old Timer knives are now being manufactured in China I was concerned about the sheath quality. Frankly I was expecting something like rat leather(LOL!). But I was wrong. The leather is rough, but it IS sturdy and the stitching is neat and consistent. The sheath is about 8 1/2" long and nearly 2" wide--with a thickness of about 3/8". That's if the seller includes the original Schrade leather sheath. Overall, for a $20-40 knife it doesn't get much better than this knife. P.S.: There's a video on Youtube of someone handling the knife and I suggest you look at it before deciding whether you want to buy it or not. |
