my friend of 60 years has long cherished this knife. once, after many years of proud ownership, he lost the knife and wrote to schrade to ascertain where he could replace it. imagine his surprise when schrade sent him a brand new knife. his is a lovely story that speaks well of both the knife and its manufacturer.

i have used his knife and must have one of my own. it will replace my trusty rapala (which requires sharpening after almost every use).

I bought my first Schrade "Uncle Henry" Steelhead Knife over twenty years ago. Back then, it was made in the USA and the blade thickness was .098 inch (a tad less than the thickness of TWO dimes stacked together). The one I received from Amazon was made in China and the blade thickness was .039 inch (one half of the thickness of a SINGLE dime). The current model should be consigned to no more strenuous a task than filleting half pound Perch. I was so dismayed at the lack of quality in this current rendition of a time honored classic fillet knife that I didn't send the knife back to the Amazon distributer, instead, I sent the knife back to the manufacturer with a letter so scathing it would make this review appear to be an actual endorsement. Once upon a time the name "Schrade" on a knife was a source of pride. Today, it proves little more than an apology. My current recommendation is to buy the "Kershaw" brand instead.

I purchased this knife because I had one I had gotten in 1990 that I loved. Unfortunately it broke and I needed a new one so I decided to get one like it. This new one is not made as well as the older one. The blade is not a good and the handle is light weight and not sturdy. I do like it but it does not compare to the original one I bought years ago (which by the way was made in the USA and the new one was not)
All in all a good knife but quality is just not what I would expect from this knife manufactor.

Ok so I received this on friday and used that as an excuse to go on a fishing trip out of a local cattle boat ocean trip. We had a great time and caught a multitude of various keeper fish ranging from 1/2# to 8# fish. When the deck hands started to clean the fish on the trip back I asked the guy cleaning my fish to use my knife. I explained why I wanted him to use my knife, for this review, and he thought it was a great idea. Initially he thought that the blade didn't have enough width and that it would not have the backbone to get through the bigger fish. He shortly changed his mind. In fact he asked to use it to clean the rest of the fish on the boat. I had no problem with that as this is suppose to be a review of the knife and how it works, how better than to allow a deck hand to clean 100+ fish and get his honest opinion. So after about 15-20 fish the blade needed to be honed on a stone, which is not unusual for these guys and their high quality $100+ knifes they use. They did tell me that it took the edge on the stone quicker with less passes over the stone then their knifes normally do. All in all they loved the knife and especially loved the tip that curved on the end for removing flesh close to the tail or skin close to the end of the cut. The only negatives they had were the size of the handle and there was no where to put your thumb when really had to turn or push the blade through bone or a heave piece of flesh. For there use they would have liked a larger handle but when I used it last night and this morning to finish cleaning my fillets and prepping a pork butt for they smoker the handle was fine for me. I am a large guy, 6'5" over 300# and I have really large hands. I love this fillet knife, I will be buying more to put in various tackle boxes and hunting packs.

I have a very old version of this same knife and it is built a bit better than the these newer ones but the newer ones are still IMO one of the best filet knives on the market.

Other reviews pointing out the fact that the new generation of 167UH knives is lighter weight with a thinner handle and blade are correct . Back in the 80's I ordered one with a 7.5" blade that has been an exceptional knife. Ten years or so later when I broke a couple of inches off of the end of the blade, I sharpened it to where it became a 5.5" knife and kept on using it. They still have the same lifetime warranty which to me speaks volumes. I just received an order of 3 knives which I intend to give to my sons. I did note that the out of the box sharpness isn't what it once was but it didn't take much work to bring it to a shaving sharpness. I don't believe that there is a better fillet knife of this size for the price.
