OK, but no Beast,
This review is from: Schrade 47OT Old Timer Beast Lockblade Knife with Nylon Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement)
I love and collect Schrade knives. Mostly I own the original USA made product - good stuff. I do have a number of the new Taylor-Chinese made knives, and there's mixed results with these. Some of the Taylor product is quite good actually, but the 470T is not very good. I do like the feel of the knife, and if you don't use a knife heavily, you might just like it. But this knife is not built strongly enough to be called a beast. I work knives to death at my job, and a traditional Schrade LB7, either USA or Chinese made will give me a few year's service. I literally had my 470T break in half on the first day of use. Mind you, I was prying hard against it, but it should not have come right apart. The knife looks cool, but is not a beast. Get a traditional slip joint or lock back instead.

I purchased this Old Timer (a long time family tradition) as a Christmas gift and was disapointed with it. The knife looks cool but the actual lock on the lock blade was really cheesy and I was embarrassed to give it as a gift. I wish I'd have spent a little more money, or had had an opportunity to look the knife over before it arrived to exchange it for a better knife. I don't recommend this knife.

I had a Schrade 407T knife for over 10 years and it works beautiful. I ordered another one to have as a spare. It is now made in China. The blade does not lock properly, the weight of the knife is considerably less and the blade is softer steel. Over all the only thing the same about the knife is the name and model number. Save your money and find another knife.

I bought 2 of these at a sporting goods store in the late ninety's and I loved them. They were $20 a pop back then so when I saw the 47OT on here for around $12 I couldn't resist. It took about 11 days to receive my order, which was pretty frustrating. As soon as I removed the knife from its box I could immediately tell that this wasn't the same knife that I purchased 12+ years ago. As you may or may not know, Imperial Schrade Cutlery went out of business in 2004 and the rights to the Schrade name were purchased by another company called Taylor Brands. Sadly the production of the once USA made Schrade knives was moved to china.Original vs. New- the new 47OT is quite impressive considering that it was made in China but you can still tell by the feel and finish of the knife it is made in China. The green/black handle is not quite as thick/beefy as the ones I got back in the 90's. The blade, however, is a little bit thicker on these new ones than it was on the original. The blade material on the new ones doesn't seem to be as high quality as the original. The thumb stud on the new one is also much cheaper looking than the original. The new sheath seems to be made from nylon cloth covered neoprene & is definately high quality, especially for the price. Now for the knife- The blade locks into place nice & tight. The serrations are overdone...they don't really slice through material more like chew/saw/rip but they do work pretty well for stripping stranded copper wire. The blade came pretty sharp out of the box, definately sharp enough to give yourself a really nasty cut. The cutting edge was kind of inconsistent tho (it had a micro-tooth edge that hung over to 1 side of the blade which I had to remove). So the first thing I did was sharpen the blade on a 4-sided diamond block to clean up the edge. This went relatively smooth as it was fairly easy to remove material and took maybe 10 mins? Fine tuning (removal of the micro-tooth hang over) on the other hand was a pain & took a little over an hour. Now it is sharp enough to delicately slice an ever so thin, transparent sliver of skin from the tip of my finger, which is my standard for being sharp. The serrations were also run through my pair of chock sticks several times sharpen them up. Now that it's razor sharp, I couldn't be more pleased. As far as rating it goes, I would've given it 3 stars because it's not quite the quality that the original was & for the over-done serrations. Seeing as how it's only $12 and is pretty heavy duty & impressive for a China made knife I felt that it really deserved 4 stars. Sorry this review is so long, but I hope this helps

This is a great knife. It is the only knife that I have ever bought three times over the years, and will do so again in the future. I have Buck, Case, Kershaw, and Gerber knives at home as well in which I have payed three to five times as much for, but I always carry the Old Timer. It comes sharper than any of those. It resharpens better than any of those. It stays sharper longer than any of those. The locking mechanism and main bolt are much stronger than any of those. I have treated this Old Timer rough at times and shows no sign of wear. It has a nice well made case as well.

Great Little Knife!,

I have had one of these little Schrade knives for over 10 years now and it's still going strong! I have used it for just about anything you can think of? I have opened boxes with it, gutted fish and larger game with it, cut all manner of twine, ropes, belts and have used it to baton wood for a campfire on numerous occasions and it has taken it like a champ! I have done in more than a few knives which were more expensive than this one! I use this knife as an all purpose utility knife especially on stuff I wouldn't risk one of my more expensive knives on. This little knife is nothing fancy but it's definitely worth the paltry price which you can buy these knives for and then some! This is a tough and useful little folder! Another winning knife from Schrade! Just a note, the new ones which are made in China don't hold a candle to the old ones (like mine) which were made in the USA which is unfortunate.

I received this as a gift a few years ago. I use it to clean whitetail deer and it works great for that use. The belly in the blade works good for skinning and the serrations are useful to cut ligaments/tendons and the spinal cord. On a small button buck that I cleaned recently, I was able to split the pelvis using only this knife. The thumb 'button' on the blade is difficult to use for one-hand opening but it is useful to help your grip when you 'chuck up' on the blade for precise cuts.

To start off, this knife is a Beast but don't confuse it with being indestructable because it is not. In my own opinion this is a great utility blade for doing various tasks that you would not want to put a standard "pocket knife" through. In the description it says it equiped with a 400 series stainless, and it is no way, shape or form a "good steel" that can hold an edge forever because it can't, it's too cheap to be anything good. With that said I will now say that it is perfect for the intended use or this blade. I say this because I recently took this blade to Guatemala for a mission building trip and this thing was amazing I used it to scrape concrete clean of crap that was literally glued to it. It's a great steel for that because it is so soft that will not cip or booger up the blade it will just dull really bad, but is easily sharpend back with a good corse stone. For fifteen bucks this is a disposable blade, so you will won't be sad if you break it (if you can). The sheath is very high quality which has a pocket clip and a good size belt loop. I auctally use the sheath to carry my leatherman along with a light my fire and a solitare MAG lite. So it's a good size. The seration comes a little over done like friggin shark teeth, but I just chipped off the tips and they work fine (they tore more than cut). Over all it's a great combo of the knife and sheath for the money. The fourth star is cut because of the over done serration. Great tough utility for cheap. If you work outside and are on a budget get this knife.
