2.0 out of 5 stars Not the old Schrade, December 29, 2010

This review is from: Schrade 6OT Old Timer Golden Bear Lockback Knife with Nylon Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've owned Imperial Schrade knives for most of my adult life. Many pocket knives and of course my trusty Uncle Henry and Old Timer lock blades. I still own and use regularly the American made version of this knife. It's been a solid worker for 15 years.

But the other day I saw a new one at the counter of my local hunting supply. It looked like my old knife and I had the salesman lay the new one down on the counter as I pulled mine out. Sitting side by side, there was no comparison. Mine said USA 60T. The new one said China. The blade was thinner and didn't look to be the same grade of steel. There was considerable weight difference too. The American being the heavier. Even the salesman had to say, "they don't make em like they used too."

My knives are workers, sometimes to the point of abuse. Frankly, I'd be afraid to put my livelihood on the line with this new knife. Calling it a "Schrade" is almost insulting. If I need a new knife, I'll buy a Buck.

My nephew gave me this knife last summer. Someone had given it to him but he dulled it badly so he didn't want it anymore. I spent about 10 minutes with my Arkansas stones to restore the edge to mirror surface. I could NOT find anything wrong with this knife despite its China origin.

I returned the knife to my nephew who is currently serving in Afghanistan with USMC. He was amazed that I sharpened it so nicely for him. He uses this knife daily; I'll provide in depth report after he returns home in 2011.

FOR THE MONEY this knife is alright

There was a time when the Schrade knife was the nicer knife and the Buck was the higher value option. Today, I would reccomend the Buck 110 over this let-down of a knife.

The guality control on mine was very lacking.
I use to own a Schrade 60T that was made by the old Schrade company. It was a tank.
This one, however, was shipped to me with the OLDTIMER EMBLEM off of the handle and floating around inside of the sheath. There was a little piece of Delrin hanging off at the base of the handle that was very sharp and needed trimming. Read all descriptions carefully to make sure you get what you want. I did not read carefully enough and was surprised to discover a nylon sheath instead of the PICTURED leather sheath. The item description was correct but the picture was misleading.

The tip I got on mine was very weak as well. I bent it stabbing into a thick stack of PAPER! I was doing a penetretation test that I have done on all of my knives and this is the only one that bent. And when I say bent, I mean it crumpled into sharp, jagged hook. I had to use a coarse stone to take it off, then re-hone the whole edge.

A good thing about the one I got...It was RAZOR SHARP right out of the box. It was as as sharp or sharper than any knife I have ever gotten from Cold Steel, Buck, Kabar, Kershaw, Leatherman, or SOG.

After the tip fix, trimming the jagged piece off of the handle, and supergluing the emblem back on, the knife grew on me a LITTLE.
Not enough to reccomend the P.O.S. though

BOTTOM LINE

You dont want to get a knife that is constantly going to remind you that you didn't spend much money. If you want a blade of this style, you should save your pennies and get a better knife like a Buck 110(which is still a high value option). If you only have twenty bucks or less and want an old school design like this, go for it. Be ready to perform some maintenance and do not expect the quality that came with the Schrade knives of the past.

Cheers!

3.0 out of 5 stars The Price is about right, January 16, 2012
This review is from: Schrade 6OT Old Timer Golden Bear Lockback Knife with Nylon Sheath (Tools & Home Improvement)
I gave a 60T to someone who works for me that uses and abuses a knife daily. After 2 years the 60T is close to used up. The emblem fell off after a few days of service - a bad omen I thought - but all in all, the knife was well worth the money. I've resharpened the blade monthly, and have to put the knife in a vise monthly to tighten it up with all my friends prying. The blade still has plenty of life in it, and the delrin handle is about indestructible, but the frame looks to be getting too loose to keep on using. This isn't worth fixing when you consider the purchase price of the knife. I own a few of the USA made 60T knives, and I think they are better than this new one, but they are in my collection now. I don't think the Chinese Schrades will gain acceptance with collectors, but this knife is intended for work, and for that reason I'd say it's a decent value.
