OKAY... Let's get started...

> WHAT IS IT? <

The Schrade Survival Bolo knife is a large machete-like tool that has a 14 inch, titanium coated, fine edge, 3Cr13 stainless steel blade... and comes with a large ballistic nylon sheath, diamond sharpening stone and firesteel rod.

I'll be honest with you... When my survival bolo arrived, I didn't expect much since Schrade isn't really known for producing machetes... but once I held it in my hand got it out on the mountain, my expectations quickly changed.

> MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS <

The first thing I noticed was it's rugged, substantial feel. The blade steel is pretty thick for a machete-type clearing tool at almost 4 millimeters thick, compared to the Bear Grylls Parang which is about 3 millimeters thick.

The bolo weights in at about 26 ounces or 753 grams which doesn't feel too heavy or too light with the center of gravity being about 3 inches forward of the handle.

> WHAT A CHOPPING TOOL!!! <

It's funny, but because of the weight and balance of this bolo, my first inclination wasn't to clear vegetation and bushwhack, but to chop and baton wood.

And once I found out this bolo was full tang (with the blade steel running through the length of the handle)... I was not shy testing it out on hard use tasks like chopping, batoning and splitting wood.

> A SHARP AND POINTY KNIFE <

Even after extended use the edge stayed sharp and easily sliced through underbrush.

The pointy bolo tip has stayed sharp through several days of use and is great for poking, prodding and piercing...

I was super excited to recieve my Schrade Bolo and at first I was not dissapointed at all. First of all the good. The blade itself is fantastic. It is heavy with a nice thick spine and takes and keeps an edge very well. The grip is superb. I am very happy with the knife itself. It has replaced both my machette and small tomahawk in my camping pack. Now for the bad and the only reason I did not rate it five stars. The sheath the knife came with just misses the mark. It could be great right out of the box, but it wasn't until I made modifications to the sheath. The very first thing that I did was to add a leather belt loop to the sheath. Now I know it is a very large knife, but I needed the option to carry it on my belt encase I don't want to strap it to my pack. That wasn't such a big deal because I knew it didn't come with a belt loop. The major problem that I had, and perhaps it is just a fluke was the fact that about the fourth time I slung the knife over my back, long before I had an opportunity to get it in the woods mind you, the bottom plastic attachment point for the sling broke completely in half. There was no tension on the straps other than the knife itself. I'm just glad it didn't happen out in the bush. I fixed that problem by adding a paracord loop through the attachment point on the bottom of the sheath. As a matter of fact I cut the upper plastic fastener off and added paracord there as well. Other than those two issues the sheath is very good. The pouch that came attached to the sheath with the sharpening stone and ferocium rod is a great plus. I was actually able to fit one of my homemade fire starting "inferno's" in the pouch, plus with some adjustments to the pouches straps i was able to attach a significant amount of paracord as well.

I received this blade as a gift. This is a big intimidating blade, it looks heavier than what it actually is. It is easy to manage, it feels good in the grip, has good balance and the weight is forward. The sheath is decent, and the price is right. It comes with a decent sharpener, and a flint. The blade is thick and full tang, it swings easy with a nice follow through.

If you are looking for an easy to manage blade that has some strength and is not too heavy, or bulky this may be the blade for you. It is a much needed addition to my kit, that has versatility and it looks cool too. It is a good cutting/Chopping tool. I like it a lot, and will make good use of it.

If you are in need of an outdoor/camping machete, this is one to have! It is built like a tank, the blade was quite sharp when received, the handle is very comfortable for my large hands & it lessens the shocks when cutting into wood. To me it is more of a very large camp knife than a machete but it sure can perform that duty quite well. If I was lost in the outdoors and this is the only blade that I have, I would not feel too bad, I can make shelter, make spears, clean & dress game & it would be a good protection tool! I have several Schrade products in my collection and all are of great quality & at decent prices to boot! I highly recommend this blade even if the only outdoors you may venture into is your backyard, if needed it will do it's job.

For this price, worth every penny! A sturdy dependable piece of gear. So far from what I can tell this machete will stand up very well for whatever task you may have in mind. The sheath is fine for what it is,and the diamond sharpener and fie starter are more than adequate. Thumbs up to Taylor, Schrade and Amazon. This blade is made in China,I've stopped caring.
