Best fountain pen I've owned.
el jefe
I got this pen, as I enjoy a nice pen that writes well, is larger then most ball point pens in circumference, and has a heavy duty feel to it.

Overall, I find this to be a well constructed and nice writing pen.

I am a big fan of fountain pens for many reasons - they are timeless, they force the user to pay at least a bit of attention to what they are doing and they are, with little exception, a touch of class. I am also a cook. So what I need is rugged and durable to be part of the kitchen. The Schrade is made of machined aluminum so it is definitely a tough contender. It is also not a lightweight specimen! When posted, this pen is longer than most, so it is perfect for big hands. The tactical aspect of the pen - the pointed end - is a little scary while being, well, a conversation starter.
This pen is all about business. The cap is threaded so there are no accidental ink stains in your pocket. Also, the post is threaded so the cap sits nicely if you choose. The Schrade Tactical takes standard cartridges but doesn't seem to accommodate a back-up in the pen body. Also, I have tried installing a converter, without much luck. I haven't given up, though.
The pen writes nicely. The business end is a medium, iridium nib. It rarely hangs up and stands up under adverse conditions. This is a very well-made, everyday writer with heft, durability and a functional design.

I am not a pen aficionado. I don't own any expensive pens. But I do like fountain pens (though not the mess that comes with some.) I like this pen. It writes well, and I have not had any issues with leaks, or messes so far. I think the nib could be finer, but it writes well enough, and easy. Also it's built like a tank as far as pens go. I think it's a great pen for the money. My other pens are county comm solid stainless/titanium fisher refill pens. This is a nice addition to my small (4) indestructible pen collection. Much better than having a pen cup full of disposable plastic pens that go dry because they don't get used enough.

-update-

I've had this pen for a while now, and I still really like it. However there are a few things people should be aware of. Sometimes the ink will not flow right, leaving light marks at the beginning of strokes or halfway through. It's good to warm the pen up with a couple strokes to get the ink flowing before you use it. Also helps to writing slowly, which for me means better writing. It did get clogged one time, but I used a q-tip dipped in alcohol to swab the nib and get the ink flowing again. I can leave it for weeks without using it, and it still works. However this is not a pen I would take with me out of the house, or carry in my pocket. It's far too risky that it might leak, or won't write well. Also the ink flows quite a bit and needs time to dry on some paper, which can be a mess if you touch it before it's dry. So it's a good pen that I enjoy using for bills/checks and notes around the house. I have better ball points with fisher cartridges that are 100% reliable for use outside the home. If you want a tough fountain pen, I say get it, with no hesitation. But it is a fountain pen, with all that goes along with that.

I am an Army officer and have been on a continual search to find a great pen that writes well, won't break (and ruin my uniform), is tough enough to take to the field, has a strong enough clip to stay in place in my uniform, and looks professional. These pens from Schrade do all of that, and fit inside the pen pocket on the sleeves of my ACUs as well.

I have a few "tactical pens", including a S&W one that cost me 90$ and I think these pens are superior for a few reasons. Being able to use this pen as either a ball point (great for field work) and fountain (my preference at my desk) adds extra utility right off the bat. I ended up buying a second pen just so I could dedicate one to ballpoint and one to fountain, but they are easy enough to change out. The second advantage these pens have over my other tactical pens is that the cap screws onto the base. My S&W pen's base comes to a fairly fine point, consequently, you have to hold the cap in your hand while you write. The Schrade pens allow me to screw the cap onto to the base and write away.

Onto the "tactical" aspects of this pen. This is a large metal (? aluminum) cylinder, that weighs about the same as a AA mini-mag flashlight. I feel confident that I could utilize this as a weapon if I needed to, and I am sure that those with training on the Kubotan would be very effective with this pen. The advantage I think this pen has over some of the other tactical pens is that this pen doesn't scream "I'm also a weapon" when you go through the airport. I have flown with this pen a few times in my carryon and had no problems.

I think this pen is a great writing tool for everyday use, and a wonderful alternative to a blade or firearm for your defense.

I like the versatility of this pen that it can be a fountain pen or ballpoint. Good quality and tough construction. Nice 'tactical' gimmick, I don't know if it'd be useful in a real self defense situation; thankfully I haven't needed it. As a pen, overall it's good, but it's kind of big and heavy; too much for a shirt pocket where it would be most available if needed for self defense.
The fountain pen nib is also too thick for my liking, I can't write a fine line. Nice that you can either use cartridges or get standard refills for bottled ink (sold elsewhere).
As a ballpoint, the refill that comes with it (it's a rollerball) is smooth and dark, medium width.
I used it for a while, but it became too much to carry in a shirt pocket, and if carried in a briefcase would have no 'tactical' advantage over other pens in a self defense situation because it could not be accessed quickly.
