As an LEO, one's purpose, nay, your sacred calling, is to gather all things "tactical." This is often a perilous journey we embark upon, fraught with possible disaster at any turn, such as when your spouse learns how much money is required of this quest. In spite of this we persevere. We spend countless hours wading through the vast charade of common, superficial trinkets provided an inadequate veneer, called 'subdued' or 'FDE' and then promoted as being "tactical." The Schrade Tactical Fountain Pen however is not party to such tomfoolery.
I can only speak to it's fountain pen mode as is my preference, but I'm sure the included ball point pen works well considering how great the fountain performs. The pen is actually made of metal, including the clip which is mounted securely. I bought both the silver and black but have used the silver. The finish holds up well; at times I have it loose in a cargo pocket and there are some scuffs, but somehow they blend in quite well. I'm not certain how that would look on the black version though.
One great feature is the space for an extra ink cartridge within the pen body. I've found other pens don't always provide for this, leaving you in a bind at inopportune moments. Speaking of ink, I've used the Calligraphy Black Cartridges by Manuscript--they come in a 12-pack- with great success. I also tried a version by Staedtler but found they don't work as well with this pen. The ink listed as "frequently bought with" this pen is produced by Monteverde and I'll give them a shot some time as well.
To those who think this pen is "too heavy" or "too long" (when the cap is screwed onto the tail), I tell you to go flick a Bic while you Cross back over to a Parker. Leave Schrade for the tactical folks.

For the price, these are awesome for when you need a fountain pen that can take a beating. Also, don't forget to get the Monteverde Mini-converter so you can use your own ink.

Having come straight out of Afghanistan and living with the Afghans, I know how important a "pen" can be, both implication of education (to the Afghans), and a weapon...since carrying a weapon around them, surrounded by them while having chai...wasn't always the best option. So that is why I began my Tactical Pen collection. (So I consider myself a sort of expert on close proximity combat and control.)

Now first of all the Schrade Tactical Pen is overall a nice looking pen, it's style and feel makes this a better weapon than a pen due to its weight and digit placement(s); and the actual "plung it into your enemies skull" tip has a look and feel of what it is intended to do.

My ability to change the insides of the Schrade pen was relatively easy...I did it without looking at the instructions! (This is my pen; there is only one like it...Ha haha)
So the casing, well...I wouldn't suggest having this gleaming, shiny object in the open during high noon...reflection can give you away...go with a black casing, one that is sort of "blued" or better yet...subdued in color (black for those of you that don't understand military lingo).

Schrade tactical pen has a screw on cap, which made me feel more likely to own it for a longer period of time because I would actually know where the cap was...as long as my dumb-ass didn't forget to screw it back on. The cap actually screws onto the back of the tactical pen when using it as a writing utensil. I know this might seem a little time-consuming, but the threads are a good fit on both ends.

Random thought: In a dire situation...say, you were signing the US exit strategy with President K.; and 20 Taliban members burst into the room...

Very nice pen. The nib is smooth. Fun to write with. The zombie apocalypse has not gotten to my neighborhood yet so I can't comment on its usefulness defending the entrance to our bunker. When they come I will update my review, if I make it.

Meet expectations beautifully. Bought both color options as Christmas gifts and they were a hit. Easy assembly and not too bulky.

this is a heavy duty tactical pen. I'm not sure if it's more useful for self defense than it is for writing, however, it does write well. If nothing else, it makes a statement. I recommend this product.

Slightly heavy for a pen, but surprisingly light for it's size, and nimble. I can write for hours with a very light grip and tip pressure, without getting tired. Despite being made of metal, it doesn't get slippery. The material is absolutely solid. It feels like you could screw the lid shut, and then use a hammer to drive it into a tree, pull it out, and keep writing with it.

And yes, if you have the right martial arts training, holding this pen in your hand can be devastation.

I don't use the tiny disposable ink cartridges. Instead I use a rubber o ring and silicone gel from The Goulet Pen Company, and fill the entire body with 10 mL of ink, which lasts for hundreds of pages of writing.

Nearly indestructible fountain pen that writes beautifully as well! This pen is beautifully crafted with the screw on cap mechanisms in particular giving a very satisfying and solid feel. The only issue is that it is large verging on massive. With the cap posted, this pen is over 7 inches in length! I like large pens and I usually don't balk at a substantial writing instrument---but this pen is too large to be carried very conveniently in a dress shirt pocket and is irritating to use with the cap posted.

However, I've owned hundreds of fountain pens in my life and the particular IPG (Iridium Point Germany) nib on this one is one of the nicest on any pen I've ever used in a wet, medium character. This nib reminds me of the steel IPG used on older Taccia pens. If I could be guaranteed of getting other nibs this nice, I'd order a dozen.

If I had it to do over again though, I'd purchase the smaller Schrade fountain pen SCPEN7BK and hope for another IPG nib this fantastic.
