keeping our fine feathered friends happy,
By A Customer
This review is from: Schrodt Designs MBB-12P 12" Misty Bird Bath, Plum (Lawn & Patio)
I bought this gift for my father and he enjoys the fact that he does not need to walk out every morning and refil the birdbath like he does the other ones in his yard. I also bought a battery watering timer to control the spray mist. This way, it turns on for an hour every morning, fills the bath and it is set for the entire day until it fills again the next day! I highly recommend.

This is a cool item. You assemble it (fairly simple), push it into the ground (very easy in a raised bed, get ready to dig otherwise), turn on the water, and adjust the regulator. Mine did have some initial problems with the regulator but Schrodt sent replacement parts that fixed it. Note that the water level shot out by the mister will vary based on how much water pressure you have from day to day, but it's not that big of a problem. Many of the parts are plastic, but it's probably not that big of a deal. The big deal is that Shrodt is easy to contact and they really support their product. Buy with confidence.I hooked my bbath up to a [price] Gilmour water timer (goes on/off twice a day) and I never touch it except to hose out the bowl once a week. You may not even need to do it that often given that the mister always is refreshing the water (the excess water drips over the side). The cardinals seem to like it. The dish isn't as big as some, and I've yet to see any larger birds in it. Perhaps those would be better suited to the 24" bowl. This is a attractive, unobtrusive little unit that you can keep nearer to the house, and I recommend it.

Yes, the mister is a bit tricky to control, but not impossible. Where the tubing attaches to the bowl, the little connector thingie is too short. I had this all set up and it fell apart and I never could get it back together properly. With some improvisation and a little connector from the hardware store, we got it back together. BUT, I have never been able to get the mister angle correct so that it sprays directly upward. Bummer, because this is a neat looking addition to my hummingbird garden. Also, I did contact Schrodt via email soon after receiving it, but never did get a reply.

2 YEARS AND STILL NO BIRDS,

While this birdbath is a great idea, is easy to assemble & easy to use, it doesn't accomplish its primary purpose for me. No birds use it, and I've had it out for 2 years now. The first year, I gave it the benefit of the doubt and thought the birds were just taking a long time to find it. But this year, I watched birds come near it, or actually perch on the edge of it for a second, and then leave. They go to drink out of my decorative, NON-bird fountain instead.
It's set up in a great location, in a flower bed with shelter close by, so I don't know why they don't like it. I don't think I'll set it up next year. I guess it'll be a yard sale item in the spring.

I had read the reviews and bought this birdbath with confidence - boy was I disappointed.
To begin with, there is no way on planet earth that this is worth the price. I have used drip systems for my gardens and the tubing, regulator, pipe and bowl could certainly have been put together for less than twenty dollars! The most annoying thing of all, to me anyway, is that it is so so difficult to get a reasonable height for the spray . . . you have to place the birdbath within clear sight (and minimal distance) of the water spigot. You will need to spend an enormous amount of time adjusting the spray - and once you get it set - the flushing of a toilet will send it out of whack again, so puttting it on a timer like I have for my drip systems would be a total waste of time. I have four other birdbaths and have used the solar pump (which I like very much) and the water wiggler (it's okay but the legs should be rustproofed since it will be in water). As for this one I would just as soon nail a pie tin to a stick and fill it with the hose! So sorry - I really thought it would be better. |
