TRUSTWORTHY BIOGRAPHY WHICH NEVERTHELESS LACKS SPARK AND ORIGINALITY.

Marek approaches his Schubert biography in a similar manner to that of his work on Beethoven. And in like manner, he arrives at a portrait of the composer which is balanced, factual, and easy to read. However, it is nowhere hear as good as his magnificant Beethoven biography. The schubert work has a somewhat tired, used-formula feel about it,

and lacks the fresh vigour which Marek brought to the Beethoven work. Nevertheless, in terms of essential

biographical facts and the truth of the matter, Marek is a trustworthy biographer.
