Fine re-masters of Leonard Berstein (on Schubert's "Unfinished,") and Eugene Ormandy (on most of the rest). I bought it so as to have Schubert's best works all in one place. Good enough to inspire me to purchase others in "the greatest hits series." Three stars

This was a great CD and I listen to it often. The selections are great.

Sony's Greatest Hits series is great because you can get a feel for the full style of a composer in a single CD, because they choose pieces from all types of genres. This has a good mix of Schubert's darkest and brightest pieces. I especially like the "Moment Musical" and "Marche militaire" included on this disc. Another great thing about the Greatest Hits series is the interesting facts about other things going on in the world, found in the included timeline of the composer's life.

A must for Schubert fans. This CD has some of the best played compositions of the Maestro. You can see, in early works, heavy influence of his teacher Salieri, and of course Mozart, whom Schubert admired immensely. I particularly like the Ava Maria and the Rosamunde overture, though I thought it was a bit light for an overture. All in all, a very enjoyable CD.
