clean sound, inexpensive and similar in impact to the dg s.r.- pianist of the century or rca sviatoslav richter- giant of the piano. buy alto label's richter d. 958/960 first- it is undeniably terrific, lovely and brilliant. might then want to plunk the twice-as-expensive appian label richter schubert release: russian piano tradition- the neuhaus school: piano sonatas d.845,d.850 also before this as it may exceed even richter's d.958/d.960 (it will be one of my near future purchases). >>>d.664 is quite lovely and d.784 mysterious and detailed. the cd is twelve or so minutes shorter than richter's d.958/d.960 though and makes that one powerful as a collection piece. this release also has two impromptus that compensate slightly for the shortness and these make more sense to me as piano practice pieces than the way too tiny chopin etude/prelude bunch. they sort of relax one after the sturdy sonatas. >>>so, d.664/d.784 is a way to bide time until money is saved up for the expensive great Opp. 109-111 named beethoven sonatas by richter (in good sound). thanks to santa fe listener reviews for showing the way in.

This budget alto release duplicates a famous Schubert recital that first appeared in 1992 on the now defunct Olympia label; there is also another budget version on Regis. Here is my original, brief, enthusiastic review:

There are times when you honestly believe that there is no need to buy another pianist except Richter, nowhere more so than in Schubert. This live Feb. 24, 1979 concert from Tokyo finds him in supreme form. His playing is highly personal, as always, and not everyone will like the ruogh, crashing fortissimos in the opening movement of D. 784. That quibble aside--and the somewhat thin, hard piano sound, which is no pleasure--every bar draws rapt attention. I can only express my delight in finding two of Richter's best live performances, since the ebullient D. 664 is just as fine as the haunted D. 784.

P.S. March, 2011 -- The Alto release seems to be in better sound than the original, with the piano no longer as hard or thin.

A commenter has supplied the correct recording dates:
D664: 1 Feb 1979
D784: 7 Feb 1979
D899: 24 Feb 1979
All from Tokyo.

Another live performance for the great Russian pianist with an unparalleled sound and depth of tone. One of the things that strike me is the contrast between piano and forte that appear suddenly and still have an element of surprise even if you are not in the auditorium listening to a live performance.
