5.0 out of 5 stars Very strong Kremer recording of Schubert violin & piano music, April 12, 2011

This review is from: Schubert: Rondo D 895 / Duo D574 / Fantasie D 934 (Audio CD)
This disc contains three violin-and-piano works by Schubert, the A major "grand duo" from 1817, a Rondo and, a special favorite of mine, the C-major Fantasy, one of the most beautiful works from Schubert's too-short career, which dates from late in his life.

Gidon Kremer and Valery Afanassiev are equal partners in a virtuosic performance. Kremer has a rather thin tone, which has provoked some criticism in the past, but he is always on pitch and is very creative in his approach to phrasing. In this disc, he uses rubato (variations in tempo) quite often, but always within phrases, so the meter is often free in between cadences or harmonic landing points. In sum, it's very musical. Afanassiev is not a pianist with whom I was familiar prior to hearing this recording, but he is a first-rate performer and often plays beautifully.

Sonics are very good. This is an outstanding recording of some very attractive music. The Fantasy is a must-hear if you're a Schubert fan. Recommended.
