Wonderful book of Liszt's transcriptions of Schubert songs, August 8, 2007
This review is from: The Schubert Song Transcriptions for Solo Piano/Series II: The Complete Winterreise and Seven Other Great Songs (Dover Music for Piano) (Paperback)
Of the many piano transcriptions Liszt made of the works of other composers, those he made by Schubert are among his most inspired. This volume contains the legendary pianist's twelve transcriptions from Schubert's great song cycle Winterreise, along with the four songs of Geistliche Lieder and the beautiful songs La Rose, Lob der Thranen and Die Forelle. These rare transcriptions offer a unique blending of Classical inspiration with Romantic virtuosity. Liszt retained the intense lyricism and emotional impact of Schubert's songs as he transformed them into amazing compositions for solo piano. I absolutely love this book. My favorites are Wasserfluth, Gute Nacht and Tauschung. As always this is a great Dover edition. The notes are not too small and the print is very dark. The book lays open well on your stand. Next to each song in the book there is the full length poem that inspired it. If you are a serious pianist and are interested in playing Liszt's transcriptions of Schubert's lieder songs I know you will get a lifetime of enjoyment out of this book. This is the only version that I believe is available of Liszt's Wintereisse and it's at a great price on Amazon.
