03-16-2014 Gunther Wand has recorded this 9th Symphony more times than I could count and at least three diferent orchestras I can mention. They would be the Radio orchestras in Cologne, and Hamburg, plus the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Schubert and Wand are old friends as the grand old man of the Austro-Germanic tradtition just kept rolling along with authoritative readings that, over the years, have varied ever so slightly. This recording dates from a live session in April 1991. It is with the Orchestra of the NDR in Hamburg and runs for 52:19 of actual music.
Gunther Wand is one of myall-time favorites for a rather unexciting reason. His steadiness. Simply put, Gunther Wand gives us steady and therefore predictable Schubert, a composer with who he is totaly comfortable with and I wonder how many times he conducted this masterpiece in his long carreer. In a sense, it is a hard thing to revieew this performance, since Wand does probably what he has always done---play the 9th straight as is, and simply stay out of the way of the music for the 52 + minutes it takes to complete this Master work. Our reactions, as are mine, border on the "oh, hummmm, anothert Schubert 9th" yes, the maestro simply is fulfilling a request to have the 9th heard here or there. Kind of like a San Jose California weather forcast, "early light fog, burning off, and mostly sunny with a high in the mid to upper 80's." And the same tommorrow and the day after". We heard this a few hundrteds of times during our 10 years in the Bay Area. Schubert, in a similar manner, is a steady, predictable composer and non-suprising composer who seems unchangable.
