Most Helpful Customer Reviews

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By J. R. Trtek TOP 1000 REVIEWER on October 6, 2012
The two mature symphonies of Schubert lie on an unstable cusp. Tweak the performance one way, and they slide down one slope toward the tail end of the Classical era. Push it another way, and the works seem to presage the expansive late Romantic edifices of Bruckner and the like. I can buy interpretations of either persuasion, but at least up until the last many years most recordings opted for the grand, forward-looking approach. Bruno Weil and the Classical Band, however, crank these works back to the early 1800s with wonderful effect. The Unfinished Symphony in their rendition retains a sense of mystery in its first movement, but we're dashing about in a Romantic garden maze rather than beholding a mystic post-Romantic sky... Oops, I'm probably going off the deep end. Perhaps I should just say that while both symphonies experience makeovers to make them sound somewhat like cousins to Beethoven or Mendelssohn, they don't lose their inner strength. If you'd like to hear both as trimmed boxwood hedges rather than massive sculpted granite, give this release a try.
