This review is from: Schubert: Winterreise D911 (Audio CD)
This is, very simply, a wonderful recording. Fischer-Dieskau's recording of Die Winterreise with Gerald Moore is generally considered to be the standard, authoritative recording, but there is a lot to be said for this one, too.
Hermann Prey is a wonderful singer of opera and lieder. His full, warm voice is an instrument that is nothing short of stunning.
Irwin Gage is one of the great lieder accompanists of the century.
With these two paired together, the recording is extraordinary. Just listen to Erstarrung and Der Lindenbaum - you will see what I am talking about.
The only disadvantage is that it does NOT come with texts in either German or English.
