Book Description

October 16, 2007

Charles M. Schulz, the most widely syndicated and beloved cartoonist of all time, is also one of the least understood figures in American culture. Now acclaimed biographer David Michaelis gives us an in-depth biography of the brilliant, unseen man behind Peanuts.

It is the most American of stories: How a barber's son grew up from modest beginnings to realize his dream of creating a newspaper comic strip. How he daringly chose themes never before attempted in mainstream cartoons—loneliness, isolation, melancholy, the unending search for love—always lightening the darker side with laughter and mingling the old-fashioned sweetness of childhood with a very adult and modern awareness of the bitterness of life. And how, using a lighthearted, loving touch, and a cast of memorable characters, he portrayed the struggles that come with being awkward, imperfect, human.

Based on years of research, Schulz and Peanuts is the definitive epic biography of an American icon and the unforgettable characters he created.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Holter Graham's reading is clear and well paced, and he makes good use of pauses and emphasis for emotional effect as we peer into the miserable life a genius—the fabulously successful and enormously influential creator of the Peanuts gang. Schulz thought of himself as ordinary rather than brilliant, as melancholy rather than depressed. But no kind of unhappiness ever interfered with his 50 years of daily cartooning. Michaelis shows us that [t]o the very end, his life had been inseparable from his art and that his art reflected not only his own changing thought and circumstances but also America's political and social shifts from one decade to the next. There are two minor limitations to the audio version: it's missing the 240 Peanuts strips that illustrated and illuminated Michaelis's text, and one wishes that this captivating and well-researched biography had been unabridged. Schulz's very last Peanuts strip was published the day he died.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deeply personal (too much so?), January 25, 2012

This review is from: Schulz and Peanuts CD (Audio CD)
This book is remarkably personal, deeply personal. There are heavy insights here (whether accurate or not) into Mr. Shultz's psyche which I have to think he would be very uncomfortable with had they been published while he were living. It delves into his motivations and relations with friends, lovers, enemies, etc. in exhaustive detail. And the audio version I heard was abridged! In other words, the book is laying out the attributes of a man's soul which would indeed make him feel uncomfortable if published! (My opinion anyway.) I am a little skeptical because it is almost impossible to figure my own psyche out, let alone a man who has left earth's scene! And to this level of detail? If enjoy deep psycho-social-analysis (perhaps as Lucy "the doctor is in" might...) this book is for you.

The book is mostly supportive of Mr. Shultz without being overly adoring or spiteful. It tells the story of a flawed but beloved man and a groundbreaking comic strip. (The book is perhaps more supportive of the strip itself. This is, after all, a biography of the Peanuts strip as well.)

The story of his death and the closing of the Peanuts strip (which occurred actually on the same DAY) is still fresh in my mind; as usual... quite sad.

1.0 out of 5 stars If You know how to Read don't buy this Audio Book, January 7, 2012
I do not know who picked Holter Graham to read this bookm but they should be fired. No feeling is reflected in this reading. I read the book a few years ago and decided to get the audio book to hear it again. BIG MISTAKE!
Mr. Graham's reading drags and quite frankly I was board with this CD before I could get to the creation of the comic strip in the book! David Michaeli's book was a lot better than this audio Cd. I heard more lively readings in a middle school class room! SOrry HarperCollins,a better voice artist or another one would have been loads better! Schulz and Peanuts: A Biography

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting, December 12, 2010
By
This review is from: Schulz and Peanuts CD (Audio CD)
This was a very interesting, thorough biography of a beloved but not well understood figure in American pop culture. If anything, my interest in and respect for both Schulz and Peanuts went way up after listening to this. It's always nice to know that your heros are human too, and still managed to do what they did.

The reading is fantastic too.
