This converter works fine and gave new life to an old car stereo in my grandparents garage. Yes, like the other reviewer mentioned, this adapter is only rated for 6 amps rather than 10, but the description has been fixed now. The converter doesn't run hot while in use and the green power LED is a nice touch. However, I think that the build quality could be somewhat better, the top and bottom of the casing is warped pretty noticeably.

I originally bought a different brand, which lasted about 2 minutes before it burnt out serving a power load below its rated capacity. This one works and has not failed. It does get hot. And although you may think those ridges on the sides are metal heat sinks, they are just plastic decoration. The entire case is plastic, with just a few air holes. So if you can provide some airflow to help cool it, you should do so. I am using it to power a thermoelectric cooler, so I place it next to the cooler so the cooler fan blows on it. That helps.

I purchased this item as a bridge in order to use a MACH SPEED 12 Volt air compressor for bicycle bike tires, etc. since I sold my vehicle. The MACH SPEED Compressor worked great with the cigarette lighter outlet in my 4x4 HOWEVER, this converter by SCHUMACHER was unable to provide the power to run the compressor for a bicycle tire let alone inflate a small backyard pool!

If shopping for such a unit:

1) Find out the VOLT/AMP rating for power available through your vehicles' cigarette outlet

2) Find the VOLT/AMP requirements for EVERY accessory (phone, GPS, fridge) that you intend
to power with a converter

3) Match the ratings in 1 and 2 above and buy the unit that provides a little more oomph!
BUY THE RIGHT ONE!!!

4) Skip this particular SCHUMACHER product. It's rating is too low and will probably
frustrate the heck out of you

SCHUMACHER makes GREAT battery chargers, not a problem there. I think they misunderstood
the power needs of a wide variety of auto accessories and settled for low to mid-range
requirements to fill a perceived void. Luckily, they are not the only ones who made this error.
