Editorial Reviews

Winner of the Prix de l Académie Charles Cros, this set brings together Robert Schumann s complete works for solo piano. This great cycle benefited from having been recorded in the unique acoustics of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, by Jean-Marc Laisné. Sales of the 13 CDs comprising this set have exceeded 20,000 copies around the world. This complete recording is now acknowledged as a reference and, at the same time, an important step in the artistic life of pianist Eric Le Sage.

This is an outstanding set of recordings for two reasons. First, the sound quality has to be heard to be believed, and second, the range of technical skill and emotional sensitivity displayed by pianist Eric Le Sage is of a rare high quality. I purchased it because I thought it would be good (and because I like Schumann of course!) but it exceeded all expectations. I rave about it to anyone who will listen.

Read the title carefully: it's the complete SOLO piano music, so naturally it excludes the 4-hand works (op. 66, 99, 109 and 130), but the pieces for pedal piano (op. 56, 58 and 60)are also missing, along with a few of the posthumous works in the Wikipedia list. Even so, it's a pretty definitive collection. The playing is splendid, though individual renderings don't quite come up to the level of classic renderings by the likes of Horowitz, Myra Hess and Kempff. I do not quite share the other reviewers' rapture over the sound quality of these recordings. On my system, the piano seems so closely miked that it just about hits you over the head, and the overall sonority is a little harder and metallic than I like. But it is indeed quite crisp and spatially convincing. All this being said, this is a wonderful set and a terrific bargain. LeSage is certainly a performer to be reckoned with.

Where has Eric Le Sage been all my life? Well, for the first half of it, he wasn't born! Next question: where has he been hiding? Whatever the answer to that question, he needs to be recognized in the U.S. for the amazing virtuoso that he is. I can't believe there's no Eric Le Sage page in Wickipedia! Anyone want to have a crack at starting one?
I have never heard Schumann played with such astonishing technique! He doesn't play everything lickety-split by any means. The lyric and reflective passages are played with great sensitivity and appropriate slowness. But when he plays prestissimo, stand back! I want to hear more of this truly great pianist. I wonder why there's no Schumann Piano Concerto available on Amazon. I hope there's one hiding out there somewhere with a European label. Add to all this happy talk the fact that the sound on this recording is phenomenal. Kudos to Amazon for making this brilliant star available and at a very good price.

Having recently acquired this set, I am utterly surprised that it isn't the recipient of some Gramophone or Grand Prix award. True, it did win the very prestigious Jahrespreis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik in 1910. Still, worldwide recognition should be forthcoming in such an important a document as this. Indeed, some reviewers have already championed it as the definitive Schumann. Without a doubt, Eric Le Sage is fully within the psyche of Herr Schumann. He clearly seems to understand his idiom well. Free of sentiment, he coaxes from the keyboard all the colours of Schumann's works, from the heartfelt Kinderszenen to both books of the introspective Davidsbundlertanze. I can go on and on about the dazzling performances and sonic quality of these recordings, but the proof is in the pudding. This is one set definitely not to be missed.
