Editorial Reviews

The peerless Takacs Quartet recently nominated for a Gramophone award for their second disc of Brahms's string quartets, continue their exploration of the Romantic chamber music tradition with this disc of Schumann. The Piano Quintet is by far Schumann's most popular chamber work and one of the most beloved works in the genre. Schumann was the first romantic composer to pair the piano with the string quartet. Schumann studied the string quartets of Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn and his quartet Op. 41 No. 3 demonstrates these influences. However, it contains many highly original strokes, particularly the casting of the scherzo as a set of variations. The Takacs Quartet are joined by Marc-Andre Hamelin in an invigorating partnership that has already been widely acclaimed on the concert platform.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Newest and The Best..! April 4, 2010
Format:Audio CD
I bought this CD after its launching September 2009 ago. As one of the most famous and frequently played of Chamber Music Works, Schumann Piano Quintet Op.44 is not so easy to play. But, the presence of 'Superman of The Piano' Marc-Andre Hamelin assures this recording. His playing in every aspect is far more than Menahem Pressler that we used to know as acclaimed collaborative pianist. Hamelin shows daredevil virtuosity, clarity and this is the most important thing, TRUE BLENDNESS with the string quartet..In the same way, The Takacs give true spontaneity of stringplaying and sometimes 'erratic' character at the Scherzo. This is truly Schumannesque in my opinion. This is the perfect collaboration of The Super-Pianist and the Super-String Quartet. THOROUGHLY RECOMMENDED..

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Stark Schumann October 26, 2012
Format:Audio CD
For a long time my favorite version of the Schumann Piano Quintet has been the one by the Beaux Arts Trio with the addition of violist Samuel Rhodes and violinist Dolf Bettelheim. That release also includes the Piano Quartet and the complete Piano Trios. And if performance quality and comprehensiveness are key, I'd have to recommend that two-disc set to this single one. However, if we're talking of the Quintet only, this recording takes my cake over the other one. The Takacs Quartet and pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin give the work such great lines and texture -- I keep thinking of a well-chiseled sculpture sitting in sharp light -- that it's hard to think of the piece being given a better treatment. Also included is the Schumann String Quartet No. 3 in an excellent performance, minus of course Mr. Hamelin. Highly recommended.
