On the surface, this seems like a great product: a batting station that mounts on a chain link fence (plenty of that around the softball fields!), is simple to use, can be used by players without a lot of supervision, and takes up very little space. Instead, it is a giant headache.

First, it is difficult to insert the Schutt Striker II onto the fence. It takes an adult a minute or two to mount it, as only the first of the four legs is easily slipped between the chain links. After that, trying to get the other three legs tucked under or through other parts of the fence is a major hassle.

Once mounted, it only takes a swing or two by even my smallest, petite girl before the Striker becomes loose, and then I have to abandon the station that I'm coaching to wrestle it back into place (thereby disrupting two girls/stations). On the rare occasions that the Schutt Striker II does stay in place more than one or two swings, the ball takes forever to come to a rest so the batter can swing again. Most of the time, the batter will end up stopping the ball by hand, but then she has to reposition and reset her batting stance to hit again.

Also, the ball that is attached to the tether is a rubber ball, so the batter does not even get the feel of a real ball off the bat. Though not a show-stopper in and of itself, it is one more unsatisfying characteristic of this batting aid that makes it unsuitable for use.

Given all of the above, I eventually stopped using it. I figured I'd rather have a player shag Whiffle balls while waiting for a station to vacate than try to use it.

I believe this product may actually work if each of the four ends of the base could be secured more firmly in place with bungee cords or the like after being set up. Using a real baseball or softball instead of the rubber baseball could be an improvement as well. However, until Schutt modifies the current design, don't waste your money.

I have used 4 of these over 9 years. I coach a 13-15 yr old team and use there for batting practice swings and also for training. It is NOT hard to insert into a chain link fence. It is sturdy and you can order a part for it if you need to

It works pretty well once it is mounted, but it is not easy to install on the fences that I have tried it on. For safe use, the instructions indicate a different mounting position for right-handed batters vs. left-handers, so you either have to remount it during a practice or have one for right-handers and one for left-handers. In addition, there is no height adjustment so you have to pick an average height or continually remount it. The real advantage of this device is that it is convenient to transport and takes up little space in an equipment bag. It does add a few extra pounds though!

Great for repeated swings. Must be mounted on a chain link fence. Also, you can hit the ball even if you have very bad form. Need coach or parent observation to ensure that correct swing form is followed. My son loves and coach liked as well. Coach likes SKLZ hit a way better.
