4 STAR DOODY'S REVIEW!
"In its evolution over nine editions, Schwartz's Principles of Surgery has reflected the latest in surgical practice. In the age of minimally invasive surgery, illustrations are important and these authors include a wealth of visual material of good to excellent quality."--Doody's Review Service

Written by the world's foremost practitioners and instructors, this landmark reference logically progresses from basic science principles, including topics such as cells, genomics, and molecular surgery, to clinical areas such as pancreas. From cover to cover, the book reflects a distinctly modern approach in the dissemination of surgical knowledge, providing up-to-date coverage of all key surgical areas, from trauma and transplantation, to neurosurgery. In each chapter, this content is supported by a skill-building format that includes boxed key points, detailed anatomical figures, diagnostic and management algorithms, an abundance of informative tables, and key references.

For every kind of procedure, this one-of-a-kind clinical companion helps you meet the sequential demands in the care of surgical patients, leading to the best possible outcomes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of Surgical Literature, February 12, 2010
By
Serge Marinkovic MD (Lafayette, Lousiana) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Schwartz's Principles of Surgery, Ninth Edition (Hardcover)
I have completed this one volume 1800 pages classic text. I read cover to cover the 5th edition when I was a surgery resident. Now as a Board Certified Urologist with 12 years experience I have found this stable in surgical literature much improved from a clinic standpoint but not from a technical standpoint of surgical approach this is a remarkable text. The Chapters on Colon approached to Colon Ca are superb. I also like Greenfield's text but the prose of this surgical text is both clear and more readily understood without having to constant re and review each Chapter as I found in both Sabiston's and Greenfield's text. Unfortunately these latter text can be unclear at times almost as if they have been translated from a foreign language if at all possible. The figures and illustration are clear but not too technically challenging. Things are simplified which for me demonstrate the points more clearly and more readily. The few basic science Chapters are also very successful and stress important points without the minutia thats almost endemic in Sabiston's and Greenfield's. I wish it was in two volumes , however, I remember saying the same thing with the old edition I first read. But I often would not bring both volumes with me and was always missing the volume I left at home, so one volumes is less time consuming ultimately. A great read, simple to understand and with a minimal amount of time which greatly expand your knowledge base with a great update on current surgical thinking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Schwartz's Principles of Surgery 9th Ed., November 30, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Schwartz's Principles of Surgery, Ninth Edition (Hardcover)
This is the standard "bible" for surgeons. When I trained, I used the 3rd edition so there is a lot of up to date information in this newest edition that includes molecular basis of many surgical diseases. This is a "must have" book for surgeons in training or as a reference book to keep up to date for practicing surgeons.

3.0 out of 5 stars I've read better, September 27, 2010
This review is from: Schwartz's Principles of Surgery, Ninth Edition (Hardcover)
Schwartz is comprehensive and all that but reads like it was written by a committee- probably the same one that designs EMR systems so that they dumb down physician notes. Plodding and forgettable but will get you there eventually. Much prefer Greenfield's and the little bit I've read in Mastery of Surgery.
