3.0 out of 5 stars rack works well with carrier tray
I was given this as a gift and was helped to put this on my antique USA made Ross cruiser bicycle. It definitely needs shims to hold tight and secure it in place, so it won't swing side to side when you are riding with it. I also added a used plastic carrier tray to put on top of it so I can commute to the store back and forth with it. I would not try to put anything...

I just bought this rack at Target to go with my new Raleigh Detour bike because I commute to work and rely on it for daily errands. Like the other reviewers have stated, it does not stay in place with the included clips, but it's an easy fix. I had a left over rubber strip that typically is used in the place of the plastic rings that I put in its place (it was spare from a U-lock I installed). After I put in the piece of rubber, not only did it tighten correctly, it also didn't swing around from side to side because the rubber had grip that the plastic rings did not.

In all, the rack works exceptionally well, I was able to carry back a toaster oven strapped to the rack that was easily 2x1x1 feet in dimensions. My only complaint with it after getting it mounted is that it could stand to be longer, but if you have bungee cords in addition to the included cord, it should not really matter.

As an added bonus, the rack keeps the back of my shirt and pants from getting splash back from riding in rainy wet Seattle weather. It makes a good stand in for a fender on my bike. In addition, I also ended up buying a Bell trunk rack that strapped onto it, so it's become a pretty flexible and useful rack.

In short, if you can find a nice bit of rubber from another bike mounting kit, or can buy one elsewhere, it's a fantastic product. Otherwise as others have said, it's useless because the plastic clips included are exceptionally terrible.

4.0 out of 5 stars I agree with all of You, but..., January 2, 2011

Funny all the other reviews here are correct. But overall I really like the unit. I had the same problems as others have stated about the unit not being able to be tightened enough. Using 1 shim was not enough & 2 shims were too much. Luckily I had some sheet metal laying around(roof flashing) & I cut a piece off and wrapped it around the post twice, then the shim & then put on the carrier & it worked out ok. You can also use a tin can. If you do this be careful not to cut your hands on the sheet metal & maybe wear gloves. On certain diameter seat posts it may not be a problem at all. Remember though that this thing is long so if you force it hard or bumo it, it may move since it's acting as a lever on a small pivot. Well worth the Amazon price. I plan to buy another for my Wifes Bike. Also Amazon free shipping (cause I spent $25) & it came well packaged & quickly!

3.0 out of 5 stars rack works well with carrier tray, January 7, 2012

I also added a used plastic carrier tray to put on top of it so I can commute to the store back and forth with it. I would not try to put anything heavy on just this rack alone I would add either a basket or a tray with bungee cords to hold heavier objects, other than that no major problems with it. Works for me.

We have 3 of these now for 3 sons. They seem durable enough, no complaints so far. I was mildly disappointed that they don't extend out. Other's I've seen that look like this do. It would be nice because they are right under the seat.

4.0 out of 5 stars One mod and it's fine, October 8, 2011

Yes, it needs a little help in the form of some traction around the post. My seat post is 27.2 mm diameter and there was still plenty of gap to fill, since I wasn't using the frictionless plastic inserts. I used some scrap rubbery material (don't know what the heck it is; I've had it for years) that was 0.125" thick and firm. I'd planned to use a piece of scrap bike inner tube, but this stuff sufficed. I couldn't fit the material all the way around the post; it was too tight and I had to settle on wrapping it about two-thirds around. After working hard to get the material to fit around the post inside the clamp, I just lined it up and tightened the clamp.

Even tight, the rack can still be pushed a bit to either side before it springs back into place. That springiness is a plus, in my book, because it's a shock absorber. It always returns back to it's normal, aligned position. I added the "Bell Trunk Bag" and it totes a lot of stuff. Bell Trunk Bag

If it came with high-friction inserts, it would be worth 5 stars. Making us find our own costs it one star. Still, I do recommend it IF you are willing to put an extra 15 minutes into making it work. I like the fact that it doesn't rely on the rear wheel mounts, and I don't carry refrigerators on my bike. So it's just fine for me.

Note that it may be cheaper at your local Target; it was under $20 here. But with Amazon Prime, I buy almost everything through Amazon and it saves the time and gas needed to drive across town.

Good luck with yours!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought it for a use on my motorized bike..., July 11, 2011
This review is from: Schwinn Bicycle Seat Post Rack (Sports)
With switching over my engine to another bike with a smaller frame...needed a way to mount my gas tank level. Buying this rack...I took off the plastic carrier and mounted my gas tank to the steel post with the included hardware with the tank.

From there...took some rubber tubing from an old tire and wrapped it around the seat post. With the help of my roommate...we screwed the rack into place by rotating it around the seat post until it got to the bottom of the seat post. Since I didn't like the included bolt/nut...got a set I could tighten down with a wrench...rather than by hand. Between the rubber and the upgraded bolt/nut...my tank stays put...level and out of the way. With only 1/2 gallon capacity...I should not reach the 20 Lbs. limit of the bar.

Now...my tank is mounted behind the seat. I have a look that no one else has and I don't have to worry about filling my tank over a hot engine.

2.0 out of 5 stars Same Fit Problems!, June 21, 2011
This review is from: Schwinn Bicycle Seat Post Rack (Sports)
One plastic spacer is not enough and two is too tight. I should have returned it but I kept it and forced open the mount as to accommodate the two spacers. As it works, there are now scratches all over the opening. The fool(s) that designed this should be fired!

1.0 out of 5 stars To much trouble!, April 25, 2011
This review is from: Schwinn Bicycle Seat Post Rack (Sports)
This is a piece of junk. I have tried to use all kinds of things to keep this from swinging around but nothing is working. Unless you are willing to spend time and energy finding something to fill the space between the bike post and the rack you will not be able to use this product the spacers provided are to slippery to keep the rack from swinging. I had it swing all the way around without any pressure with both spacers completely tightened. Do Not Buy this!

Wish I had read this review, before I bought it. It absolutely does not stay in place. I wish I still had the receipt, I would run back to the store with it!
