Decent beginner bike,
By
This review is from: Schwinn Laguna Sport Road Bike (Sports)
Overall not a bad bike, it doesn't weigh a brick ton, has decent components, and was easy to assemble. A basic working knowledge of bikes is essential to getting the most out of this bike, the brakes need a little fine tuning ( depending on your preferences for how sensitive the brakes are,) but the dérailleurs were set up pretty well. The saddle is pretty uncomforable for how much it weighs, but there are plenty of aftermarket saddles available. The only required upgrade (IMHO) is some clipless pedals. They are way lighter and offer better performance. The bike isn't the best handling bike, but it does ride pretty well, and does whatever I ask of it. It isn't the quickest, but for the money I would probably buy another one.

This is not a department store Schwinn bike. This is a bike shop quality bike.,

Purchased this from Amazon for less than $300 with tax and shipping. This is not much more than the price of department store bikes. The components are a good entry to mid level quality. The assembly was fairly easy. The assembly and fine tuning everything (except gearing) took about 45 minutes. You will need the adapter for the small valve stems before you ride, it is not the standard size and the tires come with no air. For the average price of a department store bike (~ $200) you don't get much. For $100 more on this bike you get a better frame, double wall rims, better components, you get an entry level bike shop quality bike. I give this 5 stars due to the quality you get for the price. I test rode Scott, Specialized, and Trek before I bought this. They were $600 to $720 for entry level and slightly better bikes, but not that much better. Mine required fine tuning the dérailleurs. If you are unable to so, $30 to $50 at your local bike shop should get it. You will then have a smooth riding machine. The shifters on this bike are integrated into the brakes and cost about $100 if purchased separately. You push the brake lever sideways to shift one way and a thumb button shifts the other way. This decreases clutter and is more ergonomic.I am 5'6" with a 30" inseam. The medium is perhaps 1 to 2 cm too tall, however, I am quite comfortable during riding. A better seat will be coming soon for me, this is the main problem with the bike. I have ridden the bike about 14 miles so far and have had no problems with it. Had I paid $600-700, I would give the bike a 4 star rating. By the way, it weighs about 25 lbs. Buy it and enjoy it.

Bike for Best Value,
By
This review is from: Schwinn Laguna Sport Road Bike (Sports)
In my opinion this is the best value for a road/sport bike. The light weight, the Shimano gear system, and overall quality are outstanding and have provided impressive performance. The assembly was very easy although basic knowledge is required due to limited instructions. Gears and breaks are already hooked up. The assembly only consisted of putting on the handlebars, front tire, seat, pedals, and adjusting the breaks.

Good price, quality, and looks,

I paid $256 for the medium-size Schwinn Laguna, with free shipping from Amazon. It was shipped via FedEx and arrived three days after I placed my order. The Schwinn Laguna appears to be the same as the Schwinn Circuit, which is the model that Schwinn sells at its retail stores for about $600 or more. The Laguna requires some assembly, but nothing difficult. I spent most of my time adjusting the derailleurs, which were a little touchy. I came close to paying for a professional tuneup instead of spending my own time with the adjustments, but I found that I enjoyed tinkering around with the bike's components.I'm 5'8" with a 30" inseam, and the Laguna's size is fine. I had to play around with the seat and the handlebars to get the fit just right. Avid bikers usually recommend that you buy your bike from a bike shop instead of from a department store or online, but if you're a novice (like me), don't want to spend a ton of money, and couldn't tell a Trek from a Huffy if it weren't for the logo on the side, then the Laguna seems to be a great option. The price is right, the quality seems high, and it's a good-looking bike.

I got mine in April of 2008, and after a little over 3 months I am really happy with it still.Out of the box, mine had the brake cables routed backwards, and the left lever shift cable for the front derailleur was damaged and had to be repaired. The headset bearings were extremely over tightened and would hardly turn, so they needed adjustment. Bottom Bracket bearings were also over tightened. The spokes in the wheels were under tensioned and needed tensioned. The seat post was too long, and would hit the water bottle braze-ons in the seat tube, so I had to cut it off. The brakes both needed toed to keep them from squealing. The fork drop outs were also slightly bent but easy enough to align because the fork is Cro-Mo. The only flaw in the bike is the front derailleur doesn't quite have enough clearance for the chain in extreme gear selections like small ring in front and small cog in back. This is normal, and most shift levers will allow you to compensate by giving you a half-click to trim this out. Not these levers. It might sound like a lot of troubles, but as an (ex) professional bike mechanic for 16 years, these things are the norm for this price range of bike. Schwinn has changed owners many times, and like 80% of all bikes you see for sale in the US these days, they spec their bikes out of China. Schwinn has 3 levels of bikes, 1. Mass Market like Walmart, 2. Sport/Fitness stores, and 3. Local Bike Shop. This bike is the middle ground that you would find in a multi-sport/fitness/outdoor/club warehouse store. I've built 1000's of bikes, and this one was a bit worse than some, but better than others. No complaints! I got it for a commuter bike and it is wonderful. Rides great, balanced well, perfect gear ratio for my area, and once all dialed in, it shifts clean and brakes well. The rims are double wall and slightly aero so this makes for a strong wheel. The spokes are black and look great. The tires on mine were 115 lb High pressure 23mm Schwalbe tires, and this is a great tire. I really like the height of the stem, and as a bonus you can flip it over for a lower riding position if you want. (2 position high and low) Seat isn't great for me, but I always swap them out for one that fits me better. I also have my own pedals so I can't comment on the stock ones. Frame has eyelets for a rear rack, and enough clearance for fenders on both ends. All bearings (hubs, BB, headset) are standard cup and cone, they are not "sealed" (listed Spec sheet is wrong on the bottom bracket, which says it's "cartridge"), but do have limited mechanical push on hub seals. (use the water proof grease in these) A professional build or tune will make this good bike great! I have Amazon Prime shipping, but this did not arrive in 2 days, it took 2 weeks and wasn't eligible for Prime 2 day shipping. Other minor specs that have changed from those listed are: Threadless "Ahead style" stem and fork, instead of the older threaded style. (saves weight and easier to adjust) No "canti-bosses" (cantilever brakes) these are side-pull.

Great bike for the value.,
This review is from: Schwinn Laguna Sport Road Bike (Sports)
I got this bike when I finally had gotten tired of looking for road bikes on craigslist. The price was a little more than what I wanted, but after reading a couple of favorable reviews, I decided to get the XL (I'm a little over 6').The good: - Not a lot of assembly required out of the box. - Wheels were fairly true out of the box. - For being a metal frame, it's surprisingly lightweight. - Shifting has been super-easy on my rides. - Schwalbe tires have held up really well -- I've been doing a 20+ mile commute in Tucson, and there is NO shortage of thorns, bumps, and potholes that I can't avoid on my ride. The bad: - Replace the pedals with something more durable. They're plastic, and mine actually got warped. The back end broke off after two months' use, so I had to go get a new set. - The saddle is a little too wide if you're going long distances; upgrade when you get the chance. - Replace your tubes ASAP; after going through three flats in three weeks, I went with some slime-coated tubes and haven't had any problems since. Like the bike mechanic's review, you're really getting a bike that is comparable to ones in the $800-$1500 range at a bike shop. I took mine in for a tune-up as soon as it arrived, and haven't had any major problems after 2-1/2 months of riding. Granted, I could have trolled craigslist longer, but when you're trying to save money on gas, every drop saved is money in your pocket.

everything i get on amazon always ends up better then i think it would be. because i look at the reviews and see what people say. this is no exception, all the reviews are good and so is the bike. looks better in person. the only thing that sucked is that i had to bring it to a bike shop to assemble the gears and brakes. i got it for $250 with free shipping. i would pay $400 for the same thing its real nice. great quality

If you're strapped for cash and ABSOLUTELY have to buy a bike from Amazon, this appears to be a pretty good choice. It's not a whole lot cheaper than some entry level road bikes, once you factor in shipping(unless you can finagle free shipping). If you're handy and can make it fit you, go for it. But I still think most folks would get more bang for their buck with a nice used bike.
