5.0 out of 5 stars Great bike. Here are some specs: March 24, 2012
By Kevin
Amazon Verified Purchase
23.2 lbs fully assembled
Front crankset is 50-34
Rear cassette is a 9 speed Shimano Sora 11-13-15-17-18-19-21-24-28. The listing says 7 speed which is incorrect.

I was very happy to see 11 as the minimum. Most bikes seem to have a 12 as a minimum, as the general consensus has 11 placed only for the pros. I have a hard time understanding that philosophy.

Front forks and rear triangle are indeed carbon fiber. This bike is very smooth to ride, probably around 50-75% reduction in road vibration compared to an all-aluminum setup. Even larger bumps are significantly dampened, not just the high-frequency pavement noise. If you've ridden on paint stripes on the road, it's similar to that. Or another way to put it, it was dark outside when I took my first ride and I thought the tires had lost air but when I checked them they were still at the full 125 psi.

I plan to update performance when I have more data. Thus far on a ride around the neighborhood with this bike vs my 30-year-old Cannondale yielded 17.7 and 16.4 mph average, respectively, riding at similar heart rates of 146 and 144.

Assembly was a bit pain in the butt. It took around 3 hours. Instructions were written as if way more was preassembled. The frame had the rear wheel on it, but the handlebar stem, handlebars, front brakes, front wheel, seat, and pedals all had to be put on. The back tire would not take air. Upon taking the tube out I found 2 holes. Fortunately I had a spare tube for the 700c x 23 tires. The stem is a bit short for this wheel type but I got it to work. The wheel itself has very tall walls making it difficult to get the tire off and on.

Front brake cable was way too long and I had to buy a cable clippers from Home Depot to cut the excess. Other cables were sized correctly but all had to be adjusted.

I did all the derailleur adjustments myself by following the instructions in the manual. It took some tinkering but I got it all working perfectly. This was my first time doing any derailleur adjustments. The front shifter is set up for a triple but it's only a double, so I had to break from the instructions a bit to get it to work. Otherwise you have to do 2 shifts to get it to shift from the large gear to the small and vice versa.

As frustrating as it was with the assembly, riding the bike quickly erased those thoughts. It is a really nice comfortable bike to ride. I am 5'6" and got the medium frame (56 cm) and it seems to fit me fine. I picked it up for just over 5 bills and it's an incredible deal.

***Update***
I bought the Topeak QR Beam Rack EX and MTX Trunk Bag. These have worked great for hauling my stuff to and from work.

After 1,300 miles I need to re-adjust the rear derailleur but otherwise everything is working great.

As another reviewer mentioned, you should replace the rim tape with the fabric cloth type. The rubber strip that comes with the bike gives out at 125 psi and the tube pushes into the spoke holes and pops. I went through a few tubes before finding this problem. Replacement tubes -- Niagara Cycle Works sells the Schrader tubes with 48 mm stem, Sunlite brand. Your local bike shop probably will not have these.

4.0 out of 5 stars great frame, cheap components December 13, 2009
I have had this bike for about 5 months now, the bike frame is very good (aluminum/carbon fiber forks) but the shifting componenets are not good at all, causing most of the problems... so, I would recommend this bike if you are thinking of having a good decent frame but are thinking -or would like to- upgrade the saddle, shifting components (cassette, chainrings (here is where I have had most of the problems since the material they are made of is super flexible and will bend just 'cause it feels like it, making the chain slip out of it, this happens on 40% of my rides) and front derailleur, etc) and maybe even the handlebar.
I have had a lot of fun with this bike and I have put about 2000 miles on it already, I crushed head onto a Benz SUV that cut me off and stoped suddenly and the front wheel did not budge anything and taking into consideration that I was going at least about 20 miles per hour I can honestly say I was more than expecting the wheel to get damaged (to bend like an 8). I have ridden this bike everywhere in Manhattan to around South Florida and I am very pleased with it, just take care of replacing the chainrings for something good and you'll be riding in peace...

4.0 out of 5 stars More Info About the Schwinn RS 5.0 July 20, 2012
Size Name:Medium|Amazon Verified Purchase
DELIVERY, PACKAGING, and ASSEMBLY

The Schwinn RS 5.0 Road Bicycle arrived on time, was double-boxed and well packaged to ensure a damage free delivery. Assembly, tuning, and fitting took me about 4 hours with great attention paid to detail. The required assembly includes installation of the front wheel and front brake caliper. You will want to adjust the break pads as well- both forward and aft- to ensure proper positioning/contact on the rim. Required assembly also includes installation of the stem, handlebars, and seat post (the saddle comes pre-mounted on the post). Upon the advice of others who purchased this bike and were good enough to leave helpful reviews, I immediately replaced the cheap, thin rubber rim liners with better quality cloth 700c 16mm rim tape at a cost of $10. The wheel mounted reflectors that came with the bike were large and very unflattering - I chose to remove them, but please keep safety in mind if you intend to ride at night.

FITTING

I am a male, 5'6" tall with a 30" inseam. I found the medium frame (see SPECIFICATIONS below for detailed frame measurements) to be just a bit tall for my inseam measurement with barely enough clearance of the top tube with both feet flat on the ground. Ideal fitting to my anatomy required positioning the saddle nearly as far forward as possible on the seat rails and lowering the seat post to just a bit above the top of the seat tube (about 1/2" higher than the lowest possible saddle height). I chose to reverse the handlebar stem to reduce the reach to, and slightly raise the height of, the handlebars as much as possible. As the pedals that come with this road bike are basic platform pedals with nylon toe clips & straps I immediately upgraded/replaced them with black Shimano PD-R540 clipless pedals at a cost of $65. Having taken the bike for a few test rides I feel that I was able to achieve a reasonably good fit.

TUNING

Fitting the bike and finally tuning the Shimano Sora shifters and derailleurs was made far more manageable by mounting the bike on my trainer. Some minor adjustments to the front derailleur were all that was necessary to get the bike shifting smoothly and properly. Sora shifters and derailleurs have trimming functions that must be understood and utilized to achieve the best possible result (proper chain position/no noise) when changing gears.

PROBLEMS

My rating of this bicycle would have been 5 stars if not for this minor issue. I noticed that when the rear wheel was free spinning that the plastic spoke guard was not spinning with it and was actually rubbing against the spokes making an alarming scrubbing sound. The plastic spoke guard appeared to be badly warped on one side. I simply removed the spoke guard altogether and double-checked that the rear derailleur limit was absolutely set properly to minimize the likelihood that the chain could derail between the cassette and the spokes. It is advisable to replace a broken or warped spoke guard to avoid serious damage to your wheel and possible injury should the chain derail between the spokes and cassette. As this is a cheap(<$10) part to replace I did not view it as a significant problem.

PERFORMANCE

Up to this point I have found the bike's features, function, and handling to be quite impressive given the entry level price. The quality of the frame is the strongest selling point of this bike at this price point. The carbon fiber components effectively dampen road vibration and reduce overall weight. The Shimano Sora shifters are relatively noisy as compared to higher quality components, and the thumb activated upshift lever can only be used when your hands are on top of the brake hoods- but I found them functional and reliable. I will consider upgrading to Shimano 105's in the future. As a recreational road cyclist I average about 18 MPH on this bike.

As others, I struggled to find more detailed specifications for this road bike. I have provided as much information as I am able below in an effort to help potential buyers to make an informed decision.
