Amazon.com

The PTI Schwinn Deluxe Child Carrier provides a lightweight, yet sturdy design that mounts directly onto your bicycle's frame so that you and your child can enjoy biking together. With the PTI Carrier, the child is positioned behind the rider and over the rear tire, providing a steadier riding experience than with a front-mounted child seat. Your little one can enjoy the view of the road, with a little more protection from the wind than he or she would have on the front of the bike.

Unlike bike seats that require the purchase of a rear rack, the PTI Carrier comes with a mounting system that mounts directly to the frame of the bike. The seat itself removes from the base without tools when you want to ride without it on the bike, and you can even load other cargo on the mount.

Built for safety, the PTI Carrier is suitable for older babies with good head and neck control and toddlers weighing up to 40 pounds. The carrier's lightweight, yet sturdy polypropylene frame is designed to surround the child for protection in case of impacts. The child is secure with a quick-release harness as well as a padded cross bar that also provides a comfortable resting point for their hands. Little feet and legs are surrounded by the molded frame and secured with Velcro leg restraints. For additional safety, the seat comes with a spring and spoke guard included.

Key Features:

  • Direct frame mount with included base
  • Seat can be taken on and off without tools once installed
  • Quick release safety harness
  • Velcro leg restraints
  • Padded cross bar
  • Molded design to surround child
  • Included seat spring guard and spoke guard
Specifications:
  • Weight capacity: up to 40 pounds
  • Construction: polypropylene

We bought two of these based on the brand name Schwinn and they certainly live up to the name. Easy to install, everything fit without modifications. Assembly time probably no more than 20 minutes for the first one and 15 minutes for the second. All you need are a phillips screw driver and 10mm wrench, it's that simple.
As for child safety, the seats seem to be very well thought out with adjustable foot rests and leg straps, dual shoulder straps, and a lap bar. I don't see how your child could possibly get out of this seat once all the restraints are secured.

I tried 2 other carriers before this one and it was the best so far. My daughter loves it! I would buy it again.
Just an FYI- the instruction sheet states "Do not use this carrier on bikes with rear suspension" this was nowhere on the box.

Pros:
-Child seat is easy to remove and just leaves the "cargo rack" so if you want to ride without the child you don't have to breakout the screwdriver and wrench (LOVE THIS!)and you can use the cargo rack for other things
-Very heavy duty plastic and stable...other seats were saw were very thin plastic
-Love the headrest extension which is not pictured here but is easy to install and remove based on the child's height
-bar across the seat raises up for easy buckling
-Numerous safety features

Cons:
-My 2 year old daughter was wearing crocs and her feet were too wide for the foot holes. Also, the Velcro straps that go across the shins are a little odd. Side note: My daughter only weighs 26lbs right now and she pretty much fits perfectly...I do not see how a 40lb child could fit in this carrier.
-I have a cruiser bike ([...]) and when we mounted the brackets like the instructions said the carrier was tilted forward, i ended up having to raise my seat to get the carrier level enough for my daughter to ride.

I bought a Schwinn women's Sanctuary Cruiser Bicycle to use this with. The page even recommended it. I figured it would attach to the flat shelf above the back tire. It does not, and that shelf interferes with mounting it. I took too long taking it out of the box to attempt setting it up, so I'm stuck with it.

I really wanted to like this rack more, and from the reviews I thought I would. Mine came with its own rack which was good because it would not fit on my existing one. Installation was simple enough and the whole thing doesn't add an appreciable amount of weight to the bike. The seat seems very secure and I like the locking mechanism as well as the safety pin which will prevent it from sliding off.

I gave each of my daughters a ride in it after I set it up tonight. My older daughter--almost 4, 39" tall and probably 32lbs--went first. She had a blast but the backs of my shoes scraped the front of her shoes on every revolution. Her feet really couldn't go any further back. This was extremely annoying.

Then my 2.5 year old went for a ride. She's 33" tall and probably 25lbs. Her feet hit mine, too, and even though she's not even close to being the max size, her feet were already at the lowest level in the seat.

I'm 6'1" so my MTB frame is not small. I have the rack extended to its furthest limits so I'm really disappointed there isn't enough clearance between the riders. I really wanted to like this carrier. I definitely won't be using it for long rides, but for commuting to one of their daycares before going to work, I think I can bear the aggravation for a mile or two.

I spent a lot of time agonizing over a choice of seat and am really glad I chose this one. Admittedly, I do not use this for all-day rides, but for morning and evening commutes as well as a Saturday afternoon outing, it does exactly what I was hoping it would. The seat is sturdy, provides good coverage and is simple to operate. My kid asks to go for rides in it and the only sounds I hear out of him are occasional burbles of pleasure. Naturally, I do have him in a helmet.

I'm going to agree with the reviewers that were skeptical about using it for kids at the upper end of the rated weight scale, and I also noticed that some shoes may be a tight fit in the "stirrups." That said, like most toddler transport products, how long did you think you were going to use it for anyway? I think it's the right size for when you'll need it.

As for the assembly, if you do any of your own basic bike maintenance, you'll find it straightforward. If installing a rack or adjusting your brakes are something you have a shop do for you, then you probably want them to install this for the sake of your child's safety, if not for your own sanity.

Great seat. A real value. I finally picked the right one!

I looked into a number of types of bike carrier for toddlers (ours is 16 months now, but was under 1 year when we started looking into this). The trailers didn't seem like a fun option as the child is low to the ground and far away from the parent. The front mount versions looked interesting but I had read a few reviews that said balance is an issue and I was concerned that my handle bars were too narrow.

We settled on the Schwinn for him to sit on the back. First off, I'll talk about rear mounted carriers. I like that he's behind me and fairly close...I can hear when he's excited about the trip and I reach back and give him a poke if I want. There's no obstruction in front of me, so I can react quickly tho things and don't need to worry about him doing anything around the handle bars.

My biggest concern is around balance; both while riding the bike and loading him in it. Riding the bike is harder, due to the additional weight over the back tire and at times his weight throws things off a little. Nothing crazy but it can provide a little wiggle when peddling harder or at slower speeds. The more troubling issue is that because he is so far back and I have fairly light bike (i have a single speed road bike), the bike wants to tip back. With very little pressure upwards on the front of the bike, it will tip back and drop my little guy on his head. This hasn't happened and I'm careful to keep a hand on the bike at all times, but the risk is there. If I had a heavier bike then this might not be an issue, but on the other hand, he's not getting any lighter.

As for the Schwinn, so far it's been great. It did take a little while to get the rack installed but once that was on, it's fairly quick to pull the seat on or off.
