4.0 out of 5 stars The whole family loves this toy
I got this toy for my 21 month old and she absolutely loves it. When I first looked at the picture it didn't look like much and I couldn't figure out how the colors were going to "change". Once we got it and used it we saw that the disks of color blend together to create all the colors of the rainbow as it spins. My daughter loved it, both my husband and I thought it was...

3.0 out of 5 stars Its OK.....but
The top is fascinating as it spins. It humms and changes color. The only major complaint is that it is not very durable. After only 4 days my 14 month old son was able to pull the whole top spinner handle off from the top of the top!! He has done this several times. Not a good feature. I may need to find a way to super glue the handle in place. For now I put the...

I got this toy for my 21 month old and she absolutely loves it. When I first looked at the picture it didn't look like much and I couldn't figure out how the colors were going to "change". Once we got it and used it we saw that the disks of color blend together to create all the colors of the rainbow as it spins. My daughter loved it, both my husband and I thought it was neat and the grandparents fell in love with it too. My father in law actually wanted one himself for "stress relief".
The toy has a suction cup that sticks to the floor and so it doesn't fall over as it spins and the handle is pretty easy for a child to learn to pump up and down. It is made of plastic and metal, but the handle is not attached all that well and it only took a couple of tosses by my toddler before the handle fell off. It can be popped back on but it's going to come off again and again. It's probably fairly durable for child that doesn't toss his/her toys, but not for one that does. All in all it is a really neat toy. Fun for the whole family.

I was quite disappointed to find that the red and blue "handle" of this toy is made out of plastic ... Since it is such a classic toy and is partially tin, I had expected the other parts to be a higher quality and perhaps to be made out of wood. I don't think I would have ordered it if I had realized beforehand that about 70% or so of this toy is plastic... It just feels cheap. Love the concept, hate the plastic.

I have seen complaints about a flimsy handle BUT that is the best part!!!
At what, mechanically is the most stressed point, rather than bend or break,it is designed to snap apart.

I told my granddaughter that anyone can break things but a smart child can fix things. There is applause and "high fives" every time she "fixes" the handle.

After several years the joint is still secure and I am buying a new one only due to cosmetic dings and dents.

4.0 out of 5 stars Color-changing top, January 18, 2007

I purchased this top for my granddaughter, who is 2, for Christmas. She has a brother who is 5-1/2 and a cousin who is 6. They all loved it and played with it most of the day. The only drawback, as told to me by my daughter, is that it sounds a bit like a train while it is spinning, which I am sure the kids love, but after a while got on the adults nerves and they had to turn the kids attention to other toys. Other than that, I would have given it 5 stars. My grandchildren love it, and of course now that it is now Christmas day, they don't play with it constantly, so the train noise is not such an issue.

Our kids (1 and 3) adore this top! In response to a low review - yes, the handle detaches, but it's made to do so - that way it is easier to pack and travel with, and it keeps the toy from actually breaking. The top handle portion detaches in one long piece that appears to be perfectly safe. An adult can detach it when desired, and it's only happened twice when our kids were playing with it - and we've had it for a month with daily play. It pops right back on. Our kids play with this top for hours, and adults and visitors do, too! The changing colors and shades are fascinating, and the whistle is quite fun as well. It's a timeless toy, and a deal at this price!!!

Great, classic fun that requires no batteries. Definitely for ages four and up for independent use. Our top functioned fine in all areas, however, several years after purchase the entire handle including the inner metal rod that gets the top spinning would pop out very easily. I was thinking of this top very early this morning and suddenly finally realized what a danger it could be to, well, anyone. If a small child happens to remove it anything is possible; it's a lethal weapon. I am going to contact Schylling to let them know. Hopefully, they look into the matter. The last time I contacted Schylling to ask them if I indeed owned a recalled Dr. Seuss jack-in-the-box, they first ignored my email and then gave me such a bunch of ludicrous baloney about recalls in general that I reported them to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Just forewarning anyone to get tough if you have to contact them due to a faulty top.

Addendum on 2/7/11: Well, Schylling responded to my email and the rep stated that the top has never been recalled and that it "has a very low defective rate". The rep did say that they would pass my info on to the appropriate departments, which probably means that my info has left cyberspace and/or is being used as a coaster for a coffee cup. I tried...

They said this is for ages 3+, but I bought this for my grandaughter who is 16 months and she had it mastered within 5 minutes. Great teaching tool, since so many toys don't teach but kids get to watch. This teaches pumping the arm up and down, how to stick it to the floor and watch it and then start it up again - one of her favorites.

this top is large and clearly well made. we bought it for our 1 year old who loves to watch things spin.
he can successfully push the handle so it spins. the humming sound is not at all loud or obnoxious.
this is a quality top.
