I purchased this guitar for my granddaughter. When it arrived I was pleasantly surprised by the look of the item. A very nice toy guitar for the price. Upon actually using it I experienced the problems that many of the reviews have had. The strings would not tighten and stay tightened. I was upset that it was useless as a guitar even for a child. I thought why produce a guitar that looks so good that is garbage as a guitar. I wrote an email to schylling and received a quick response telling me it is a child's guitar (###;-{##)
But some times the small screws on the back of the tuning handles do not get tightened at the factory. If the screws are not tight the adjustment will not work properly. I tried it and it's true. The guitar works beautifully (for a child's guitar which I realized that I purchased). Time will tell how often they will need to be righted if ever but for now I am a happy grandmother. watch out I have a budding star on my hands. Schylling 6 String Acoustic Guitar

This toy is probably the worst we've ever owned simply because its a guitar but the strings are so loose we can't play it. In the first second my child opened it a string broke, but then when we tried to tighten the others it wasn't possible, we tried screwing the knob and a screwdriver. This thing is just a huge piece of junk - don't waste your money like we did.

First, and foremost, as the label on the instrument says, THIS IS A TOY.

That being said, it does not tune as a guitar does. Do not buy this if you want a guitar for your child that will play like the real thing.

However, as a music teacher, this instrument is good for young children to play and hold and pretend, and create interest in playing. Let's talk about some of the tuning challenges.
First the tuning pegs are friction mechanisms that work best when the little phillips screw is tight. If the peg will not hold its position you may need to tighten them. They should be quite snug, but still able to turn.
Next if you want to tune the instrument, it is a challenge. Why? Because unlike a guitar that has 6 different strings, this instrument has 6 strings too, but technically has 4 different ones. (string 1, string 2, string 3 and 4 are the same, string 5 and 6 are the same).
The best tuning I have found is in the open position. (Which means to tune the instrument to play a chord when no fingers are pressing a string on the finger board).
I tried this tuning (1st string = E, 2nd string = C, 3rd and 4th strings to G, and 5th and 6th strings to E). I am not saying this is the proper tuning, just a suggestion for what worked best for me and this instrument.
Now when the child strums the instrument it sounds good and this will encourage them to play. If the cover all the strings at the same fret, it still sounds good.

I would not recommend this instrument for children past 2nd grade unless you just want them to have a toy.

I read the review the company wrote on how to tighten the back screws of the cowboy guitar and I have a happy 3 yr old grandson again. It took a phillips screw driver and 1 minute and it's noisy here again. lol

Horrible. I was weary about this purchase because of the poor reviews but a couple said "follow the instructions on the back to tune the guitar and it works fine". With that, I made the purchase.

I followed the instructions on the back and it is impossible to properly tune this guitar. I play guitar myself and I know how to tune a guitar. The only progress I made was by tightening the screws on the tuning pegs. With that you can get the strings to stay tight, but not hold a note.

Do not buy this guitar.

If you have hopes that your child will play a single chord, it cannot be done on this toy.

If you just want to get your tottler something to strum, DO NOT BUY THIS P.O.S. The strings come lose so easily, you will be "tuning" the guitar more than the child will be playing it.

You would be better off searching the web for instructions on how to make a homemade shoebox guitar than buying one of these. I got this understanding that it was a toy and not expecting my kindergartener to pluck out Cat Stevens tunes. But even as a toy, you might as well remove the strings before you hand it to a child. The tuning pegs lack any ability to remain tight, so when you turn them, they just immediately loosen, leaving strings that can't even be strummed. If you do manage to get a semi tight string, the thing breaks with even gentle playing. I was hoping this would be a way to get my child interested in music, but after many times asking "Daddy can you fix this?" my son has left this guitar forgotten in a corner.

Bought this for my 2.5 year old twins. I had read reviews, and followed one grandmothers recommendation of how to tighten the screws and not break the strings. Very happy she posted that! I would have otherwise been VERY annoyed at the quality.
Against my wishes, someone tuned the guitar and broke 2 strings, so both extra's it came with are gone. Then my kids played with it for a day and another string broke. I'm hoping to get it into the music shop for better quality strings, but for the price - you can't beat this! My kids LOVE it, and really, thats all that matters.
