This is a great product if you're trying to figure out whether your child is ready for a small caged or tank pet. The sea monkeys require very little care, but you have to be somewhat consistent (feeding when the tank is clear, about once a week, and watching the water level). If your child is okay with that over a period of time, he or she may be ready for an easy aquarium, or even a hamster. If your child is not ready, the sea monkeys don't require so much care that they'll unduly burden the parents to whom their care falls. You won't be stuck walking them.

I brought these to put on my desk at work as a sort of entertainment for all the people that come through. They worked out very well. Within a week they were thriving. And it seems like they are reproducing already. This seems like it would be a great classroom project. You just have to be patient for the first couple of days.

I have given Sea Monkeys as gifts for years. Very educative and fun to watch grow! PS: dont feed them too much because the water gets murky.

We thought our four year old son might get a kick out of the seaming magic of the Sea Monkey experience, and he did. Sea Monkeys have been around for many years and I had them as a young boy as well many years ago. The idea of just adding water and some packets of eggs to create your own Sea Monkey population is as fun as it ever was. The process is not something you will complete in an afternoon or a day even, this will take time to prepare the water and follow up with occasional aerating and feeding with the supplied spoon. The whole process may actually help teach younger children that everything is not instant gratification and great thing come to those who wait. My son was so excited to get the water ready and pick the location of the small tank , but soon learned he could not add the eggs until the tank was ready. Distilled or filtered water required for the filling of the tank and a temperature of 72-78 degrees works best for hatching the eggs. The following day we added the eggs and the wait began. My son enjoyed the daily, sometimes multiple daily checks for new Sea Monkeys as well as stirring the water with the included spoon for aeration. The eggs hatched around day 3 and he was very excited to see the tiny new additions we had. The Sea Monkeys are very small at hatching and can only be spotted by some in the magnifying bubbles on the tank walls. The feeding starts 5 days after they hatch and the food they supply has lasted us the 3 months we have had them. We have had the Sea Monkeys for 3 months and they almost completely disappeared twice since we have had them, but rebounded on their own with out anything more than aeration and replacing any evaporated water. They do come with a 2 year growth guarantee from Transcience Corp. the makers of Sea Monkeys, in which they will replace the stater eggs and purifier for a small handling charge. The Sea Monkey website gives many tips and great ideas for the success of your new found tiny pets. They also offer additional food packets and other supplies for purchase if you choose to keep your Sea Monkeys going for long periods past the starter supplies. With so many things today being battery operated , computer based games or just high tech in general we felt this was a great idea and learning experience for our little one. If your looking for something different as we were , this may just be a nice change of pace.

It is a good educational toy for the kids. Helps teach them some responsibility, caring for a live pet. They love coming home everyday to see if they hatched. When they did, the kids readily fed them and took care of them. They were somewhat entertaining for a while until the novelty wore off somewhat, but it is still great for the kids to learn about having a pet.

My Sea Monkeys are doing well. They are low maintenance but you have to follow instructions just right. I am enjoying having them on my desk at work. They live, die, eat and mate right on my desk. :p

These little guys hatched in a about a day, my girlfriend loves them (were in college...and I still enjoy them). It was definitely a flash back to my childhood, except I seem to remember less sea monkeys hatching than I got this time. Maybe they got better at storing the eggs? Also a good note is to re-read the instructions. As a kid I always tried to clean out the tank when it got too full of algae. I read on the instructions this time that, that is actually what they eat, so no wonder they died each time I cleaned the tank last time...

Back when I was a kid, Sea Monkeys came with a nice heavy duty plastic tank. This thing is more flimsy than a plastic cup. If you want to try hatching monkeys, I say go for it, but find a more expensive kit that comes with a better tank.

That's a stone cold lie, but even with a short lifespan, these creatures are a MUST HAVE pet for every child! They're beyond easy to care for, fun to play with (you can pet them!) and they grow fast and big. The female ones are kind of ugly, but you'll want to take good care of them so they can make cute little babies that surprise you when you spot them! The "tank" is hard to clean, and you'll probably wind up buying all the little accessories that the company offers to help clean it, carry the monkeys around (I used to have the necklace), and give them "toys" to play with. I never managed to name mine, since they all look alike, but I still loved them and was sad when they passed. I believe this is a great pet to teach compassion for the smallest, faceless, buggy-eyed creatures. Perhaps the reason I don't eat animals is because I had sea monkeys back when I was a kid. Love these lil' shrimps, glad they're still selling them.
