4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, weird binding problems
Useless novelty item or no, I'd say this book still makes a perfectly good gift. Read through it first, and it contained a plenty of names that sound a good deal more reasonable than some of what you hear when you get introduced to a modern kindergarten class. Reads as much like a sci-fi trivia book as it does a baby names book, and is very entertaining.

1.0 out of 5 stars meh
This book really just includes the most obvious and cliche sci fi names, like Barbarella and Kirk. It's not divided into boy/girl names, and there are even fewer girl than boy names. I expected a greater abundance of sho'nuff sci fi names, and not a bunch of suggestions like "Amanda" or "Alan" -- because somebody in a sci fi movie was named Amanda or Alan. I could...

That said, the binding is so tight and the margins so narrow that it's a struggle to read the words nearest the spine. The publisher needs to find a new printer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treat for sci-fi enthusiasts to page through, December 2, 2007
This review is from: Sci-Fi Baby Names (Paperback)
Sci-Fi Baby Names: 500 Out of This World Baby Names from Anakin to Zardoz lives up to its title and then some. Each of the five hundred names presented is listed along with a source and trivia tidbit referring to characters of that name in science fiction movies, comics, television, and books. The names are categorized into traditional names ("George"), masculine names ("Cameron"), feminine names ("Talleah"), power names ("Quentin"), intellectual names ("Sigmund"), and exotic names ("Vultan"). A treat for sci-fi enthusiasts to page through, and a nice starting point for prospective parents interested in naming their child something a little bit different.

I bought this book because I am a Sci-Fi fan and the idea of it amused me. I find the book incredibly entertaining. My only problem is the binding is incredibly stiff and tight making a little hard to read.

I expected a greater abundance of sho'nuff sci fi names, and not a bunch of suggestions like "Amanda" or "Alan" -- because somebody in a sci fi movie was named Amanda or Alan. I could probably write a better book than this. Where is Case? What about Lando? You won't find those names in this book. You'd have better luck just reading some science fiction books.

1.0 out of 5 stars Novelty item, July 1, 2008

This really wasn't of any serious use other than that of a novelty item. My wife picked it up once and never looked at it again. For parents thinking seriously, put your money towards a better choice.
