This review is from: Sci-Fi Classics: Assignment Outer Space; Laser Mission; Blood Tide; Brain Machine [4-Movie Pack] (DVD)
This is a decent little collection of very low-key sci-fi/horror movies. They're not great or even particularily memorable but they are fun and even interesting if you're into this kind of thing. If the price is right they are worth picking up. Here's what you get for your ducats.
ASSIGNEMENT OUTER SPACE: Directed by Antonio Margheriti (Cannibal Apocalypse) this is an Italian Space Opera from the 60's. The awesomely named Rik Van Nutter plays a Space Reporter assigned to write about an interstellar crew. He becomes rivals with the ship's captain for the affection of the delicious Gabriella Farinon. Tensions rise aboard the ship until mutual problems, in the form of a haywire unmanned ship hurtling toward Earth, gets them to put their differences aside for the good of all mankind. It's not a very good movie but it has the naive charm that all movies with Styrofoam spaceships bobbing around on strings seem to have. LASER MISSION: Brandon Lee plays a mercenary sent to Cuba by the CIA to recover a top nuclear scientist, Ernest Borgnine; before the Soviets can force him to build them some kinda Laser based Super Weapon. This movie is a TOTAL product of its time and will hit you with a dose of 80's nostalgia right between the eyes. With cheesy dialogue, action, costumes and music this movie is one huge Wheel O' 80's Cheese. Revel in it. BLOOD TIDE: A treasure hunter accidently releases an ancient monster from a cave on the Greek Isles and after millennia of imprisonment it's VERY hungry. The only way to satiate it is to send it regular virgin sacrifices. A few months later a honeymooning couple is tromping around Greece looking for the new bride's sister (Monster-bait). Something like entertainment ensues. Well on the one hand you have high caliber actors like Jose Ferrer and James Earl Jones, but on the other hand you've got the really mean sensei guy from KARATE KID (Martin Kove), so they kind of cancel each other out. However, you've also got Lydia Cornell, the smoking hot actress who played the blond on TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT, so I'd say this one just tips into the win column. BRAIN MACHINE: Four people, including Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane and Major Dad volunteer for a government "mind experiment". Something of course goes horribly wrong and by the end of the movie everyone is either trying to kill themselves or each other. Despite the fact that James Best actually does some decent acting as an emotionally tortured clergyman, this movie is B-O-R-I-N-G. It's definitely the weakest in this collection. |
