Product Description

This amazing engine will run from just the heat of you hand. A true Stirling engine of the gamma type, the SciMod 375 has a regenerator built into the displacer piston. Based on the design of Dr. Senft, this is a low temperature difference Stirling engine. A few degrees difference in the temperature of the bottom and top plates is sufficient for the engine to run. Watch the SciMod 375 run on a hand, a cup of hot water, a cup of ice water, and even setting on snow at www.youtube.com. Stirling engines are famous for their thermal efficiency and are being studied as a way to provide green energy. The regenerator makes the Stirling engine have the maximum possible theoretical energy efficiency. Some model engines based on the Senft design are sold as Stirling engines but do not have a regenerator and are merely hot air engines with ordinary thermal efficiency. Although some of these so called Stirling engines will run off of the heat of a human hand, a true Stirling engine like the SciMod 375 is best for teaching about energy efficiency. The SciMod 375 is designed for optimum performance and made from quality materials including brass, anodized aluminum, and fine ball bearings. Besides its use in education, the SciMod 375 is a real attention getter in public and a fine conversation piece. Use it to fascinate your friends. It is also a fine gift or executive toy.

The SciMod 375 works as well as advertised or better. It's 5-9/16 high, and 3-3/4 wide at the base. I also bought a glass dome to display it in. The dome is 5.5" wide, and 8" tall, and has a wooden base. The engine fits very well in it.
I put the engine on a hot cup of coffee or water, give it a little boost, and it runs for over two hours. If I just set the cold engine on the palm of my hand, let it warm up for twenty seconds, and give it a slight spin, it will run as long as I hold it. I put it outside on the snow for a few seconds, give it a little spin backward, and it starts pumping away.
A little expensive, but high quality. I don't think it will provide enough power to pull stumps out of your yard, but it will give you something to do while a contractor pulls them. ;^)
