About the Author

Dr. Keller received her Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry from the University of New Mexico in 1992. She continued her work with an NSF postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Molecular Biology at UNM followed by a Burroh's Wellcome Fund Postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Molecular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Keller has written for the Christian home school market for over eight years and, having been in an academic setting for most of her adult career, Dr. Keller understands the issues faced by both religious and secular parents. The Real Science-4-Kids books are Dr. Keller's answer to the difficult territory teachers and parents navigate as they try to sort through the various philosophical perspectives found in science. Real Science-4-Kids is written as a "worldview-neutral" curriculum that Dr. Keller hopes will not only provide students with a solid foundation for science, but also give them the tools to evaluate scientific data on their own. Dr. Keller does not believe we should rely on the "experts" but instead learn how to critically evaluate every scientific claim.

I've been searching for some time for a "real" science course for my home-schooled children. There is a plethora of experiment books, but very little in the way of systematic course instruction. Traditional texts are geared toward the classroom setting and often jump from one area to another without much depth on any particular topic.

This series is excellent, providing age-appropriate instruction using correct terminology, but explained in an age-appropriate manner (Pre-Level 1 for K-3, Level 1 for 4-6, Level 2 for 7-9). The textbooks are hardbound, with beautifully colored illustrations on heavy, glossy paper. The lab workbooks are well-written; the author has provided a framework and indicators of what the students are to watch for and what to record from their observations. I've found that a blank lab report has been very difficult for my children to fill in - as beginners, they needed some direction as to what important, as well as exactly they should be looking for and what to write. This sets the stage and prepares them for the more advanced work that will be expected in high school or college-level courses; they are in essence learning and practicing the observational and recording skills they will need later, as well as learning the chemistry (or physics or biology).

My 1st grader and I love this curriculum. The Activities are perfect for her, and text has just enough information to feed her brain without getting too technical. Love it!

What I love about this workbook is how the experiments really help cement the concepts in a child's brain. Much better than just rote learning, doing the experiments allows a child to apply the concepts of chemistry in real life situations, outside of the home classroom. This workbook makes learning chemistry fun for kids and teachers!
