Book Description

9 and up4 and up
Join the international community of scientists and explore the world's most exciting discoveries . . .

Build a simple machine like the ancient Egyptians might have used to build the pyramids. Construct your own rocket thrusters to simulate those used by U.S. astronauts. Make your own paper using a 2,000-year-old recipe from China.

These are just some of the exciting projects you'll find in Science around the World, a fun and fact-filled book of experiments and activities highlighting scientific discoveries from throughout history that shaped the way we live. Travel from England to Australia, Germany to Japan, Mexico to Canada, as you explore some of history's most famous moments in physics, chemistry, biology, geology, and more. Each experiment includes a list of required materials, illustrations, and easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6?Like Silly Science and Everyday Science (both Wiley, 1995), this is a collection of simple science activities that are fun and easy to do. The book offers examples of how science and scientists from 10 countries affect our lives and features projects as diverse as discovering the "pyramid power" of simple machines in Egypt; making paper and a sand timer in China; simulating an earthquake in Japan; and testing the sun protection factor of different sunscreens and making a boomerang in Australia. Each chapter has an outline map of the world showing the location of the country being considered and introductory historical notes on the scientific discoveries being explored. A list of materials (all easy to obtain), step-by-step directions, and a brief "What Happened" statement of the scientific principles involved are given. "Did You Know," "Amazing Science," and/or "Amazing Scientists" sections of facts and trivia extend interest. Some of the black-and-white illustrations clarify procedural steps and outcomes; others are cartoonlike interest catchers. Safety warnings are highlighted in the text. Children will enjoy these activities, but may need adult help in assembling the materials and in focusing on the scientific principles behind them. A useful source for projects that integrate science and social studies.?Carolyn Angus, The Claremont Graduate School, CA

From the Publisher

Travel with these popular children's book authors as they take you from ancient times and far away places to the present day and your own backyard to explore some of the world's most exciting scientific discoveries. Build a pyramid using the same techniques as the Egyptians did or use modern materials to make paper following a 2,000-year old recipe. Chapters on 10 different countries include an introduction, an experiment and, where appropriate, a profile of a scientist(s) from that country. Contains scores of illustrations plus miscellaneous science facts and figures.
