Book Description

March 28, 2006
From the world's greatest scientists comes the world's greatest science book--now in a smaller format at a great new affordable price. With a foreword written by critically acclaimed author Simon Singh (Fermat's Last Theorem), and essays by such major writers as Richard Dawkins, Susan Greenfield, and John Gribbin, it presents 250 of the most significant milestones in the history of scientific discovery. Accompanying this unique perspective on our ever-evolving view of the universe are some of the most visually dramatic illustrations you'll ever see. Short, lucid articles focus on everything from the speculations of the ancient Greeks to today's Nobel Prize winners, from Ptolemy's theory of an earth-centered universe to the first steps on the moon, and from the dawning of the concept of zero to the cloning of Dolly the sheep. Biology, physics, astronomy, medicine and mathematics: the breakthroughs in every field are all here and celebrated, in the first truly accessible, fully illustrated story of science.

Editorial Reviews

Review

I've done an extensive review mailing for the Mini Science Book, and Peter Tallack appeared on the Fi Glover Programme in the 'Ask the Expert' slot (BBC Radio 5 Live on 12 May). He was also on the TODAY PROGRAMME (BBC Radio 4) on 4 June. THE SCIENCE BOOK is no. 10 in the TIMES Play Hardback Greatest Gains/New Entries chart for the week ending 17 May, which is great news. PROSPECT did a give-away in their September issue, for the winner of the crossword puzzle. Reviews expected so far include TIME OUT ''Perfect for dipping in to, thebook also illustrates the way in which science works - each new discovery building on the work of the past, with the odd genius sparking a spectacular revolution in thinking.'Geordie Torr, GEOGRAPHICAL 'this book comes highly recommended to anyone who...wants a concise overview of the whole of science.'Richard Wentk, FOCUS 'truly accessible and lavishly illustrated...A fabulous overview, capturing a world of fascination.'Sky Text (on-screen text service which runs on all Sky TV channels - audience 8million). '[a] gorgeous tome...[with] stunning artwork.'GOOD BOOK GUIDE There has also be a review in THE HERALD (GLASGOW) --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Science BOok is great for homeschooling multiple children!, May 2, 2006
This review is from: The Science Book (Hardcover)
I got this book to supplement our Homeschool supplies. It is great for teaching children of multiple ages because each page covers a compelte topic. It starts at the begining of time and goes chronologically through the eras of science. Each "lesson" talks about the scientist with a little bit of surrounding history as well as the scientific information, which helps to merge history with science and bring a better understanding to the concepts. I am really glad I bought this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Breadth and Beauty of Science, March 12, 2007
By
Robin Craig (Gold Coast, Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This heavy coffee-table book describes 250 scientific and mathematical advances, one per double-page spread. Arranged in chronological order, each advance includes who discovered it, the year of discovery, and an easy to understand (well, as far as possible, some advances are just more complicated than others) description.

Almost all entries consist of one page of text with a facing page of a relevant illustration or photo. Each article is cross-referenced to related entries if you want to pursue a single topic.

This book will interest anyone with a casual or professional interest in science and mathematics, or just the intellectually curious. It is not an exhaustive history of science, but a collection of highlights simply and attractively presented.

You won't want to read this all in one sitting. It is a book for browsing, dipping into random pages and discovering some new snippet, or maybe just something you didn't know about an old snippet. The breadth of subjects is enormous and it spans the history of thought from 35,000 years ago to the present.

In fact, it is the perfect coffee-table book. Each page is a self-contained entry, so you can spend as long or as short a time browsing as you like as you sip your tea or coffee and think about life, the universe and everything. You will certainly learn about things you never knew existed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great coffee table book, November 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Science Book (Hardcover)
This book is an excellent way to pass a few minutes and learn something in the process. You might find something in here that you would like to research more. Nothing in this book is exhaustive, but it is a great overview of many things in Science. Leave it in an open place where others can see it, maybe they'll find something in it that interests them!
